Dominique Swain (born August 12, 1980) is an American actress. She became famous for her starring role in the 1997 drama film Lolita. In the same year, she also had a supporting role in the popular action movie Face/Off.

Throughout her career, Swain has mostly acted in independent films. Some of her well-known independent movies from the late 1990s and early 2000s include Girl (1998), The Intern (2000), and Pumpkin (2002). She later appeared in films like Alpha Dog (2006) and Road to Nowhere (2010). She has also starred in many action, thriller, and horror movies.

Early Life

Dominique Swain grew up in Malibu, California, where she went to Malibu High School. Her parents separated when she was 15 years old. She has three siblings, and her sister, Chelse Swain, is also an actress.

Career

1997–1999: First Movies and Gaining Fame

In 1995, when she was 15, Swain was chosen out of 2,500 girls for the main role in the movie Lolita. The film, released in 1997, was based on a famous novel and received positive reviews from critics. Caryn James of The New York Times said Swain's performance was "extraordinary."

Also in 1997, Swain played the part of Jamie, John Travolta's teenage daughter, in the hit action movie Face/Off. Critics praised her performance in the film. The next year, she starred in the drama Girl, where she played a high school student.

After her role in Lolita, Swain found it hard to get new acting jobs. She felt that many people only saw her as that one character and offered her similar roles. She turned down many scripts because she wanted to play characters that were more interesting and well-written.

2000–2006: Focus on Independent Films

In the early 2000s, Swain starred in several independent films. These included The Smokers, The Intern, and New Best Friend. She also acted alongside actor Brad Renfro in three movies: Happy Campers, Tart, and The Job.

In 2006, she played a dancer in Totally Awesome, a movie that made fun of teen films from the 1980s. That same year, she had a supporting role in Alpha Dog. This crime drama was based on a true story.
