Shawn Mullins' Early Life and Army Days
Shawn Mullins was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He loved music from a young age. He went to Clarkston High School where he met Amy Ray from the Indigo Girls, who became a friend and mentor.
Later, he studied at the University of North Georgia. There, he played music by himself and led the college's military marching band. He attended college with an Army scholarship, thinking he might join the military. But he soon decided he wanted to write songs instead. Even so, he had to serve a short time as an inactive officer in the U.S. Army Reserve. He reached the rank of 1st lieutenant before finishing his service.
Shawn Mullins' Music Career
Starting with "Twice Removed" and Solo Work
Shawn Mullins first formed a band called "Shawn Eric Mullins with Twice Removed." It included a drummer, Mickey Hendrix, and a bassist, Carlton Brown. This group helped him become well-known around his college and in the area. Later, the band members went their separate ways as friends. Shawn then started working with different musicians while building his name as a solo artist.
Big Success with Hit Songs
Shawn Mullins became very famous when his song "Lullaby" became a hit. This song was from his album Soul's Core. The music video for "Lullaby" featured actress Dominique Swain.
Another one of his songs, "All in My Head," was used on the TV show Scrubs. Shawn wrote a quick demo version of the song in just 24 hours after the show's producers asked for a theme song. While it wasn't chosen as the main theme, the demo was used in an episode.
His song "Shimmer" was also popular. It was on the soundtrack for the TV show Dawson's Creek. In Australia, "Shimmer" was used to promote the 2000 Summer Olympics. Many people in Australia still think of it as the unofficial song for those games.
In 2002, Shawn Mullins formed a band called The Thorns. He was joined by Matthew Sweet and Pete Droge.
