Don Gilet grew up in a place called Caldmore in Walsall, England. He has two older sisters. As a child, he went to Whitehall Junior School. Later, he attended Blue Coat Church of England Academy. He also went to Sunday school at Caldmore Gospel Hall. To become an actor, he studied at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.

His character Lucas Johnson returned to EastEnders again on December 25, 2020. He departed on March 18, 2021. In 2022, Don Gilet played Coach Harris in the BBC series Rebel Cheer Squad. He also had a brief guest appearance in EastEnders in 2024.
In 2024, it was announced that Don Gilet would be the new lead detective in Death in Paradise. He plays DI Mervin Wilson. He had previously appeared in the fourth series of the show in 2015 as a guest star, playing a character named Andre Morgan.
