Don Martin Mankiewicz (born January 20, 1922 – died April 25, 2015) was an American writer. He wrote many books and scripts for movies and TV shows. He is best known for his novel, Trial.

Early Life

Don Mankiewicz was born in Berlin, Germany. His father, Herman J. Mankiewicz, was also a famous screenwriter. Don had a brother named Frank, who became a journalist. Don went to Columbia College at Columbia University. He finished his studies there in 1942.

His Amazing Career

Don Mankiewicz was a very talented writer. He wrote books and also scripts for films and television. A screenwriter is someone who writes the story and dialogue for movies and TV shows.

His novel Trial was published in 1955. It was so good that it won the Harper Prize. Later, Trial was even made into a movie. Don was also nominated for a big award, an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, for his work on the movie I Want to Live! in 1958.

Don wrote for many popular TV shows. He wrote the very first episode, called the pilot, for the show Ironside. He also wrote an episode for the classic science fiction series Star Trek, called "Court Martial". He even helped adapt President John F. Kennedy's book, Profiles in Courage, into a mini-series for television.

His Family Life

Don Mankiewicz married Ilene Korsen in 1946. They had two children together, Jane and John. Later, they divorced in 1972. Don then married Carol Bell Guidi in 1972. With Carol, he had two more children, Jan and Sandy. His son, John Mankiewicz, followed in his footsteps and became a screenwriter and producer too. His daughter, Jane, is a fiction writer whose stories have appeared in The New Yorker magazine.

His Passing

Don Mankiewicz passed away on April 25, 2015. He was 93 years old. He died at his home in Monrovia, California, from heart problems. He was survived by his wife, Carol, and his four children.
