History of the Don River
An Ancient Border and Trade Route
For a very long time, people thought the Don River was the border between Europe and Asia. It was a well-known landmark in ancient times. The river was also called the Tanaïs by the ancient Greeks.
The name "Don" comes from an old word meaning "river." This shows how important it was to the people living near it. The Don River has always been a major route for trade and travel.
Connecting Rivers and Important Events
At one point, the Don River gets very close to the Volga River. A special waterway called the Volga-Don Canal connects these two big rivers. This canal is about 105 kilometers (65 miles) long. It makes it easy for boats to travel between them.
This area was very important during World War II. A major battle, called Operation Uranus, happened here. It was a big turning point in the war.
The Don Cossacks
The Don River also gave its name to the Don Cossacks. These were groups of people who settled in the rich valley of the river. They lived there in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The Don River is also famous in books. A well-known writer named Mikhail Sholokhov wrote many stories about the Cossacks and their life along the Don.
