Dona Lluna: A Tribute to Womankind is a large sculpture found in Sant Vicent del Raspeig, a city in southeastern Spain. This impressive artwork was created by the artist Saülo Mercader. It stands proudly in the middle of a round public space, called a rotunda.
The sculpture was officially shown to the public on March 11, 2007. Important local leaders and a symphony orchestra from Madrid were there for the special event.
About the Sculpture
The Dona Lluna sculpture is a very big and strong-looking female figure. It is made of bronze and weighs about 2 tons, which is like two small cars! The sculpture is also very tall, standing at 4 metres high.
Around the main sculpture, there are twelve painted stones. Each stone is 2 metres tall. These stones are arranged to look like a lunar calendar, which tracks the phases of the Moon.
Meaning Behind the Art
The name Dona Lluna comes from the Valencian language, which is spoken in the region. It means Moon Lady.
The artist, Saülo Mercader, was inspired by his own childhood. He was born in 1944 in a large house called Los Molinos in San Vicente del Raspeig. He lived there for his first five years. The sculpture has a special message carved into it: "Aquí nací, aquí doy". This means "I was born here, I give–her this work of art–here". It shows his deep connection to his hometown.
