Dona i Ocell (which means "Woman and Bird" in Catalan) is a huge sculpture in Barcelona, Spain. It stands 22 meters (about 72 feet) tall! This amazing artwork was created by the famous artist Joan Miró. It's located in the Parc Joan Miró, a park named after the artist himself.

This sculpture is special because it's covered in colorful tiles. Another artist, Joan Gardy Artigas, helped Miró by adding all these beautiful tiles. "Dona i Ocell" is one of three artworks Miró made to welcome visitors to Barcelona.

A Special Welcome to Barcelona

"Dona i Ocell" was officially opened in 1982 or 1983. It was one of the very last large sculptures Joan Miró created. He worked on it with his good friend and helper, Joan Gardy Artigas. Sadly, Miró was too unwell to attend the opening of this important work.

Miró designed the sculpture, but Artigas was in charge of putting on all the tiles. He had done this before for Miró, like on a big wall mural in Germany. "Dona i Ocell" was part of a group of three artworks. These artworks were made to greet people arriving in Barcelona. One was at the airport, another was a large mosaic in La Rambla, and this one was for people arriving by land. If you drive into Barcelona, you can see the bright colors of the tiles. These colors are a big part of Miró's unique art style.

What Does "Dona i Ocell" Mean?

The sculpture shows two ideas that Joan Miró often used in his art: women and birds. Miró loved to paint and sculpt these figures. He often showed them in simple, dream-like ways.

"Dona i Ocell" is a tall, strong shape. It has a hole near the bottom, which makes it look interesting. The entire sculpture is covered in many small, shiny tiles. These tiles are in bright, bold colors like red, yellow, blue, and green. This makes the sculpture stand out and look very lively. The different colors and textures of the tiles make the sculpture feel alive and full of energy.

The Park Around the Sculpture

Parc de Joan Miró (des de les Arenas)
The park

The "Dona i Ocell" sculpture stands in the Parc Joan Miró. This park is a popular spot for people to relax in Barcelona. It covers four city blocks near a big square called Plaça d'Espanya. The park is sometimes called Parc de l'Escorxador. This means Slaughterhouse Park because that's what the area used to be.

The park has two main parts. The lower part is full of plants and trees. You can see flowers, eucalyptus, pine, and palm trees there. The higher part of the park is paved. It has a special artificial lake. The "Dona i Ocell" sculpture rises up from one corner of this lake. It's a beautiful setting for such a grand artwork.
