Joan Gardy Artigas (born June 18, 1938) is a talented artist from Catalonia, Spain. He is a ceramist, meaning he works with clay and makes pottery or sculptures. He is also a sculptor, creating art in 3D. Joan Gardy Artigas and his father, who was also a ceramist, worked very closely with the famous artist Joan Miró.
Becoming an Artist
Joan Gardy Artigas was born near Paris, France, on June 18, 1938. His father, Josep Llorens Artigas, was a well-known ceramist. Josep worked closely with two very famous artists: Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso. Because of his father's connection, Joan Gardy Artigas started working for Miró when he was still a teenager.
He studied art at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. There, he met the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti. Giacometti suggested that Artigas focus on sculpture in his own art studio. Artigas became quite successful. He even shared his skills with other famous artists like the cubists Georges Braque and Marc Chagall.
Working with Joan Miró
Joan Gardy Artigas helped Joan Miró create many amazing artworks. One famous piece is the Miró Wall. For this project, Artigas made 7,200 special tiles. He colored each tile based on a small model Miró had made. Each tile was about 20 by 36 centimeters (8 by 14 inches). The final artwork includes the signatures of both artists. Artigas signed his part in 1979.
Later, when his father retired, Artigas returned to help Miró again. His father had worked with Miró for 20 years. They created huge murals for places like UNESCO and IBM. Artigas then worked with Miró on one of his last big projects, called Dona i Ocell (Woman and Bird). Artigas covered this sculpture with broken tiles. These tiles make the artwork look a bit like the famous buildings by Antoni Gaudí.
Other Art Projects
In 1982, another artist named Antoni Tàpies won a special award, the Gold Medal of Catalonia. He won it for a mosaic in a public square in Sant Boi de Llobregat. Joan Gardy Artigas was the one who created the ceramic parts for this award-winning artwork.
Artigas also continued to create his own art. In 1982, he had his first solo art show in America. He has also been a visiting artist at two universities in the United States. He even started a foundation to celebrate his father's artistic work. Today, Gardy-Artigas is part of the board for the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona.
