Donal Courtney (born 1970 – died 14 May 2022) was a talented Irish actor, director, and playwright. He was known for his work in theatre and television.
About Donal Courtney
Donal Courtney was born in Killarney, a town in County Kerry, Ireland. He studied acting at the Gaiety School of Acting and finished in 1991.
He helped many young actors, including introducing the famous actor Michael Fassbender to acting. Donal also started an acting school with Michael Fassbender in Killarney. It was called West End House School of Arts.
Donal appeared in many TV shows. These included Fair City and The Tudors. He was especially known for playing Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty in his own play, God has no Country.
His Plays and Projects
One of Donal's last big projects was a play called Memento Mori. He created this play with the Theatre Department at Carthage College in the USA.
The play first opened in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in 2022. Later, it traveled to a theatre festival in Michigan. After that, it was performed at the Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin, Ireland. The play finished its run at his own West End House school.
Personal Life
Donal Courtney was married and had two children. His father, Michael Courtney, was a well-known local politician and tourism director in Killarney for many years.
Donal passed away on 14 May 2022, at the age of 52, after a short illness.
