Joseph Donald Reid Cabral (born June 9, 1923 – died July 22, 2006) was a Dominican politician and lawyer. He served as a leader of the Dominican Republic from December 1963 to April 1965. During this time, he was part of a special governing group called the "triumvirate."
Who Was Donald Reid Cabral?
Donald Reid Cabral was born in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic. His father, William Reid, was from Scotland and worked as a banker. His mother, Auristela Cabral Bermúdez, came from a family with many politicians. She was related to three former presidents of the Dominican Republic.
Donald Reid Cabral studied Law at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo. He was married to Clara Tejera Álvarez. She was the First Lady during his time as a leader.
Donald Reid Cabral's Political Life
Donald Reid Cabral started his political career as an ambassador. He represented the Dominican Republic at the United Nations and in Israel.
In 1962 and 1963, he joined the Council of State. This group helped govern the country after the previous leader, Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, was no longer in power.
Later, he led the "triumvirate." This was a group of three people who governed the Dominican Republic. This happened after the government of Juan Bosch changed in 1963. During this time, Reid Cabral also worked as the Secretary of Foreign Affairs. He was also in charge of the Ministry of the Armed Forces.
In 1965, people who supported Juan Bosch tried to bring him back to power. This event led to Donald Reid Cabral's government ending. The United States tried to help calm the situation in an effort called Operation Power Pack.
From 1986 to 1988, Reid Cabral served as the nation's foreign minister again. In his later years, he was closely involved with the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC). This party was started by Joaquín Balaguer.
Donald Reid Cabral's Business Ventures
In 1947, Donald Reid Cabral started a business with Rogelio Pellerano. They named it Reid & Pellerano Co. This company later became Grupo ReidCo. It grew into a major company that sells cars in the Dominican Republic.
