Walhalla Donaustauf
Walhalla with the village of Donaustauf (around 1850)

Donaustauf is a small market town in Bavaria, a state in Germany. It's located about 5 kilometers (3 miles) east of the city of Regensburg. Donaustauf sits at the edge of the Bavarian Forest, a beautiful mountain range.

This historic town is famous for two main landmarks. High above the town are the old ruins of a medieval castle. Not far away, on a hill overlooking the Danube River, stands the impressive Walhalla. This grand building looks like an ancient Greek temple.

Walhalla: A Temple of Fame

The Walhalla is a very special building. It was designed to look like the famous Parthenon temple in Athens, Greece. This grand monument was ordered by King Ludwig I of Bavaria. It was opened on October 18, 1842.

What is Walhalla?

The Walhalla is a hall of fame. It honors important people from German history. Inside, you can find busts (sculptures of heads and shoulders) of famous scientists, artists, and leaders. It's a place to remember those who made a big impact.

Donaustauf Castle Ruins

The ruins of Donaustauf Castle stand proudly above the town. Historians believe this medieval castle was built a very long time ago, between the years 914 and 930. Even though it's now in ruins, it reminds us of the town's long history.

A Glimpse into Donaustauf's History

Donaustauf has a rich and changing history. Over the centuries, it belonged to different rulers and groups.

Early Ownership

For a long time, Donaustauf was a "fief" within the Duchy of Bavaria. A fief was like land given by a lord to someone else, who then managed it. In 1710, Donaustauf was given to the Bishopric of Regensburg. A bishopric was an area ruled by a bishop.

Changing Hands

In 1803, Donaustauf became part of the new Principality of Regensburg. A principality is a territory ruled by a prince. However, this didn't last long. Just seven years later, in 1810, Donaustauf was returned to Bavaria.

The Thurn and Taxis Family

After returning to Bavaria, Donaustauf was given to the princes of Thurn and Taxis. This was a very important noble family. In 1899, the family was given an even higher title: Duke of Wörth and Donaustauf.

The Donaustauf Palace

Maximilian Karl, Prince of Thurn and Taxis loved the beautiful scenery around Donaustauf. In 1843, he and his family moved into a new home called Donaustauf palace. Sadly, this palace was completely destroyed by a big fire on March 4, 1880.
