Musical Journey
Early Life and Training
Donna Lewis was born in Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. She showed a love for music at a young age and started playing the piano when she was six years old. Her father, who played jazz piano and guitar, encouraged her talent. By the time she was 14, she was already writing her own songs.
To become a professional musician, she studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. There, she focused on classical music for the piano and flute. After college, she taught music for a year before deciding to pursue her dream of being a singer. She moved to Birmingham, England, and began singing in a band.
Rise to Fame
While performing, Lewis also built a small recording studio in her home. She used it to record demos, which are sample recordings of songs. Around 1993, she started sending these demos to different record companies. In 1994, her hard work paid off when she was signed by Atlantic Records.
In 1996, Lewis released her first single, "I Love You Always Forever". The song became a massive hit. In the United States, it reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and stayed there for nine weeks in a row. It was played on the radio so many times that it became the most-played single in history up to that point. The song was also a top 5 hit in the United Kingdom.
The success of the single helped her first album, Now in a Minute, become popular. The album was certified platinum in the U.S., which means it sold over a million copies.
Later Career
In 1997, Lewis teamed up with singer Richard Marx to record "At the Beginning" for the movie Anastasia. The song was another success.
Her second album, Blue Planet, came out in 1998. While it was liked by critics, it did not sell as well as her first album. After this, Lewis and Atlantic Records went their separate ways.
She continued to make music independently, releasing albums like Be Still in 2002 and In the Pink in 2008. In 2015, she released the album Brand New Day.
Personal Life
Lewis is married to Martin Harris, who is also her business manager. They live in Boiceville, New York, and have a son named Archie.
