About Donna Lewis
Donna Lewis was born in Cardiff, Wales. She started playing the piano when she was just six years old. Her dad, who loved jazz music, encouraged her a lot. By the time she was 14, she was already writing her own songs!
She studied music formally at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. There, she focused on classical music, learning to compose for piano and flute. After college, she taught music for a year. Then, she moved to Birmingham to sing in a band at a bar. During this time, she set up her own small studio at home. She started recording demo songs, which are like sample recordings.
Donna Lewis became a popular performer in live shows. Around 1993, she began sending her demo songs to record labels. Atlantic Records was impressed and signed her in 1994.
Some reports about Donna's birth date are different. However, it is known that when she became famous in the pop music world, she was already in her 30s, not a teenager like many new pop stars. She has been married to her manager, Martin Harris, for many years.
Music Career Highlights
In 1996, Atlantic Records released Donna Lewis's first single, "I Love You Always Forever". This beautiful love song quickly became a huge hit. It was played a lot on radio stations in the U.S. and stayed at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for nine weeks! It was also number one on the radio airplay chart for 13 weeks. The song was played over a million times on the radio, which was a record at the time.
The song also did well in the UK, reaching number five on the UK Singles Chart. Her first album, Now in a Minute, reached number 31 in the U.S. and was certified platinum, meaning it sold over a million copies!
Later Albums and Collaborations
Donna Lewis recorded "At the Beginning" with Richard Marx for the 1997 movie Anastasia. Her second album, Blue Planet, came out in 1998. Critics liked it, but it wasn't as big a hit with the public. Still, it had a minor hit song called "I Could Be the One" in Europe and Asia. Another song, "Love Him," became a number one dance hit in the U.S.
After this, Donna Lewis left Atlantic Records. She then released her third album, Be Still, in 2002. This album featured her singing mostly acoustic songs. In the early 2000s, she also sang on several electronic dance music tracks.
Her fourth album, In the Pink, was released in 2008. One of its songs, "Shout," was used in the movie 32A. Donna Lewis also sang lead vocals for her side project called Chute, which released an EP in 2010. In 2015, she released Brand New Day, her first full album in almost ten years.
