Doreen Reid Nakamarra (born around 1955 – died October 20, 2009) was an important Aboriginal artist and painter from Australia. She was known as a leading artist at the Papunya Tula artist cooperative in Central Australia. Her unique style made her a significant figure in the art world of the Western Desert cultural bloc.

About Doreen Reid Nakamarra

Doreen Reid Nakamarra was born in a place called Mummine, near Warburton, Western Australia, in the mid-1950s. In 1984, she moved to a new community named Kiwirrkurra. She moved there with her husband, George Tjampu Tjapaltjarri, who also became a well-known painter. They wanted to be closer to her husband's traditional lands.

Her Amazing Art Exhibitions

Doreen's artwork was shown in many important places around the world.

  • In 2007, her art was part of a big show at the National Gallery of Australia. This show was called Culture Warriors. It was the first time the gallery held a special exhibition just for Indigenous art.
  • The Culture Warriors exhibition traveled to different art galleries across Australia. After that, it went all the way to the Katzen Arts Center in Washington D.C., USA, in September 2009.
  • In 2009, Doreen's work was also shown at the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art in Russia. This is a very important art event that happens every two years.

Awards and Recognition

Doreen Reid Nakamarra won a special award in 2008. She received the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award for general painting. This award is one of the most important for Indigenous artists in Australia. Her winning painting showed designs linked to a place called Marrapinti rockhole. This site is located west of the Pollock Hills in Western Australia.

In September 2009, Doreen traveled to New York City. She went there for the opening of a Papunya Tula art exhibition that included her paintings. A famous curator, Hetti Perkins, opened the exhibition. She is in charge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney.

Later Life

Sadly, Doreen Reid Nakamarra became ill in October 2009. She was taken to a hospital in Alice Springs. Then, she was flown to Adelaide for more treatment. She passed away in the hospital on October 20, 2009, when she was about 50 years old.

Paul Sweeney, who was the general manager of Papunya Tula, spoke highly of Doreen. He said she was a very important artist and a great spokesperson for her community.
