Dorlan Pabón's Club Journey
Starting at Envigado
Pabón began his football career with Envigado. During his time there, he became one of the top goal scorers in the 2008 Copa Colombia tournament. He shared this honor with another player named Wilson Mena.
Playing for Atlético Nacional
In 2010, Pabón joined another Colombian team, Atlético Nacional. He is well-remembered for scoring an amazing free-kick from 40 yards away. This happened during a 2012 Copa Libertadores game against Peñarol, which Nacional won 4–0. Pabón scored two goals in that match.
With Nacional, Pabón also helped his team win the 2011 Liga Postobón Apertura championship. In the final, Nacional played against La Equidad. After losing the first game, Nacional needed to win the second by one goal to force a penalty shootout. Pabón scored two goals in the second game, which ended 2–1. He also scored his penalty in the shootout, helping Nacional win their 11th national title. He scored a total of 50 goals in 71 games for Nacional.
Moving to Europe: Parma
Many European clubs became interested in Pabón. On June 27, 2012, he joined the Italian team Parma F.C. He signed a five-year contract. However, his time in Italy was not very successful, as he scored only 1 goal in 11 games. In January 2013, the Mexican club C.F. Monterrey announced that Pabón would join them later that summer.
Loan to Real Betis
Soon after his transfer to Monterrey was announced, Pabón was loaned to Real Betis in Spain for six months. He was registered as a loan player by Parma. This was because FIFA rules do not allow a player to be registered with three teams in one season. If he had been registered by Monterrey first, he would not have been able to play for Betis. Pabón scored more goals per game in Spain than he did in Italy. He even scored a goal against FC Barcelona in the very first minute of a game!
Joining Valencia CF
On August 16, 2013, Pabón returned to Spain's La Liga to play for Valencia CF. He had only spent a summer with C.F. Monterrey. Valencia was impressed by his short time at Betis. They agreed to pay €7.5 million to sign him. On September 1, 2013, he played his first game for Valencia against FC Barcelona. Valencia lost that game 2–3 at home. Pabón scored his first goal for Valencia on October 19, 2013, in a 1–2 loss to Real Sociedad.
Loan to São Paulo FC
On January 27, 2014, Pabón signed a one-year loan deal with the Brazilian team São Paulo FC. Even though he was Valencia's most expensive signing that season, Pabón did not settle well at Valencia. With another player, Eduardo Vargas, joining the team, Pabón faced more competition for a spot. This led to his decision to join São Paulo.
Pabón scored his first goal for São Paulo on February 26. It was a penalty kick in a 3–1 victory against XV de Piracicaba in a 2014 São Paulo State League game. Pabón asked Rogério Ceni, a club legend and the usual penalty taker, if he could take the shot. Ceni said it was not a problem.
On June 3, 2014, Pabón left São Paulo. The club thanked him for his contributions. In his last game for the club on May 31, São Paulo won 2–1 against Atlético Mineiro. Pabón scored the winning goal in the final minutes of the game. He said he was very happy for the chance to play for a big club like São Paulo FC.
Returning to Monterrey
In June 2014, Monterrey confirmed they had signed Pabón from Valencia for $7 million. He played for Monterrey for several years. On July 1, 2021, Pabón and Monterrey decided to part ways.
