A Star on Television
Dorothée started her TV career in 1977. She was a continuity announcer for Antenne 2. This meant she introduced shows and told viewers what was coming next.
Hosting Kids' Shows
She became best known for her children's TV programs. These included Les mercredis de la jeunesse (1973) and Dorothée et ses amis (1977–1978). Later, she hosted Récré A2 (1978–1987).
The Club Dorothée Era
Her most famous show was Club Dorothée (1987–1997). This show was on for about thirty hours each week! It helped make Japanese animation very popular in France. Shows like Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, and City Hunter were shown. Some people worried about the action in these cartoons.
Dorothée's Music Career
Dorothée is also a talented singer. She released many albums, usually one every year. Her songs were mostly pop music for children.
Famous Songs and Albums
She recorded well-known French traditional nursery rhymes. These were part of a collection called Le jardin des chansons. Many of her songs were used as opening themes for animated series. For example, "Candy" and "Sophie et Virginie" were very popular.
One of her special traditions was the "valise" (suitcase) song. Almost every album she released had a song with "valise" in its title. These songs had a similar tune but different words and arrangements. She recorded sixteen "valise" songs in total!
Record-Breaking Concerts
Between 1990 and 1996, Dorothée performed 56 shows. These concerts were at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy. This venue is now called AccorHotels Arena. This is still a record for a female artist there. Only Michel Sardou and Johnny Hallyday have performed more concerts at that venue.
In 1992, her tour attracted huge crowds. More people saw her concerts in France than Johnny Hallyday or Michael Jackson that year. She even won a "Fauteuil d'Or" award. This was for selling over 500,000 tickets!
Rock and Roll Interest
Later in her music career, Dorothée became very interested in early rock music. In 1993 and 1994, she hosted special prime time shows. They were called Dorothée Rock'n'roll Show. On these shows, she sang duets with famous rock and roll and rhythm and blues artists. She sang with stars like Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, and Jerry Lee Lewis. She even sang "Great Balls of Fire" with Jerry Lee Lewis! Her 1994 album, Nashville Tennessee, was recorded in Nashville. This studio was famous for Elvis Presley and Bill Haley.
