Dorothea Sophie of Neuburg (born 5 July 1670 – died 15 September 1748) was a princess from the region of Neuburg. She became a very important person in the Duchy of Parma in Italy. She was married to two different dukes of Parma, who were brothers.
Dorothea Sophie first married Odoardo, the Hereditary Prince of Parma, in 1690. They had two children together. Sadly, her first husband passed away after only three years of marriage. She stayed in Parma and later married his younger brother, Francesco, who became the new Duke of Parma.
After her second husband died, Dorothea Sophie stepped back from court life. Later, her grandson, who would become King Charles III of Spain, took control of Parma. Dorothea Sophie then acted as the ruler of Parma until her grandson was old enough to rule himself in 1735. She died at 78 years old, just before her other grandson, Infante Felipe, became the next Duke of Parma.
Family Life and Children
Dorothea Sophie had two children with her first husband, Odoardo Farnese.
Her Children
- Alessandro Ignazio Farnese (born 6 December 1691 – died 5 August 1693). He sadly passed away when he was a very young child.
- Elisabetta Farnese (born 25 October 1692 – died 11 July 1766). She grew up to marry King Philip V of Spain and became the Queen of Spain. They had many children, and her son, Charles, later became King of Spain.
Her Role as Regent
After her second husband, Duke Francesco, died in 1727, Dorothea Sophie became a dowager duchess. This meant she was the widow of the duke. When her grandson, Charles, took over Parma, she played a crucial role. She became the regent, which means she ruled the state on his behalf. She did this until Charles was old enough to officially take control in January 1735. This shows she was a strong and capable leader.
