The Duchy of Parma was a small state in what is now Italy. It was created in 1545. This new state was made from parts of the Duchy of Milan that the Church had taken over. The main city of the duchy was Parma.
The land was given as a fief (a type of land grant) to Pier Luigi Farnese. He was the son of Pope Paul III. The Farnese family ruled the duchy first. Later, the House of Bourbon took over through family inheritance. The Duchy of Parma was also part of the Holy Roman Empire until 1806. It had connections with its neighbor, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The duchy stopped existing in 1859 when Italy became a united country.
