House of Bourbon-Parma facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Bourbons of Parma are a royal family with a long history. They once ruled a small area in Italy called the Duchy of Parma. This was from 1748 until 1860, when Italy became a united country.

The Bourbons of Parma

This family is a branch of the famous House of Bourbon, a very important royal family in Europe. The Bourbons of Parma are known for their connection to the royal families of Spain and France.

How the Family Started

The family was started by a Spanish prince named Infante Philip of Spain. An "Infante" is a title given to a prince or princess in Spain. Philip was the third son of Philip V of Spain, who was the King of Spain, and Elisabetta Farnese. Elisabetta was an Italian princess from the powerful House of Farnese.

In 1748, a big war called the War of the Austrian Succession ended. A special agreement, the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748), was signed. This treaty gave the Duchy of Parma to Infante Philip. This is how the Bourbons of Parma began their rule.

Ruling Parma

Philip married Louise Élisabeth of France. She was the daughter of Louis XV, the King of France. Their marriage helped connect the Bourbons of Parma even more closely to the French royal family.

The family ruled the Duchy of Parma for over a century. They were important figures in the politics of Italy and Europe during that time.

What Happened Next

The Bourbons of Parma stopped ruling the Duchy of Parma in 1860. This happened when many smaller states in Italy joined together to form one big country, the modern state of Italy. The House of Savoy, another Italian royal family, became the rulers of the new united Italy.

Today, there is still a head of the Bourbon-Parma family. The current head is Carlos, also known as Carlo of Parma, who is a direct descendant of Infante Philip.
