Dorothy Edith Gilman (born June 25, 1923 – died February 2, 2012) was an American writer. She is most famous for her exciting Mrs. Pollifax book series.
When Dorothy Gilman started writing, most spy stories featured young men like James Bond. But her main character, Emily Pollifax, was different. Emily became a spy for the CIA in her 60s! She was probably the only spy in books who also belonged to a local garden club.
In 2010, Dorothy Gilman received a special honor. The Mystery Writers of America gave her their annual Grand Master Award. This award celebrates writers who have made a big impact on mystery writing. She passed away in 2012 at the age of 88.

Emily feels her life needs more excitement. So, she bravely offers to work for the CIA as a spy. At first, she gets recruited by accident. She's excited but also a bit unsure about her new job. However, Emily quickly learns to handle tricky situations. Her common sense and courage help her through many dangerous adventures.
The Mrs. Pollifax series is full of fast-paced stories. Emily travels to many different countries. She faces danger and solves mysteries in places like Mexico, Turkey, China, and Morocco. The last book in the series, Mrs. Pollifax Unveiled, came out in 2000.
