History of Rye Brook
Rye Brook is in the southeastern part of Westchester County. It shares its eastern border with Greenwich, Connecticut. Before 1982, Rye Brook was not its own village. It was just a part of the larger town of Rye.
Becoming a Village
On July 7, 1982, Rye Brook officially became a village. This was a big deal because it was the first new village created in New York State in 54 years!
In 1982, about 150 local residents wanted to create the village of Rye Brook. They gathered 1,536 signatures on a petition. This petition had signatures from about 36% of the people who could vote in the area. The Independent Civic Association helped organize this effort. One resident said it was "a time for a community to redefine itself." They felt residents should be able to choose their own leaders and protect their local taxes.
On June 23, 1982, the people living in the area voted to create the Village of Rye Brook. The idea passed with 58% of the votes. After that, the first election was held to choose a mayor and four trustees. Lee Russillo became Rye Brook's first Village Clerk. She was in charge of the very first election day.
