Dorothy Maclean (born January 7, 1920 – died March 12, 2020) was a Canadian writer and teacher who focused on spiritual subjects. She was one of the three main adults who started what is now known as the Findhorn Foundation in northeast Scotland. This foundation is a well-known spiritual community.

Dorothy Maclean's Life

Dorothy Maclean was born in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. She went to the University of Western Ontario and earned a degree. From 1941, she worked for a British security group in New York City. Later, she moved to Panama. There, she met and married John Wood, but they divorced in 1951.

In 1941, on her way to New York City, Dorothy met Sheena Govan. Through Sheena, she later met Peter Caddy. In the 1950s, while living in England, Dorothy became very interested in the spiritual practices that Sheena and Peter Caddy followed. Later, Peter's wife, Eileen Caddy, also joined them.

When the Caddys were asked to manage a hotel in Scotland, Dorothy joined them. She worked as the hotel's secretary.

Starting the Findhorn Community

In 1962, the Caddys lost their jobs. They decided to move into a trailer near the village of Findhorn in Scotland. In 1963, they built a small extra room so Dorothy could continue working with them.

Over time, more people joined the Caddys and Dorothy. A special community grew around them. Since 1972, this community has been known as the Findhorn Foundation. It is a place where people live and learn about spiritual ideas and sustainable living.

Working with Devas

Dorothy Maclean became well-known for her work with devas. In spiritual teachings, devas are believed to be intelligences or spirits that guide and oversee the natural world. Dorothy believed she could communicate with these devas.

Her book, To Hear the Angels Sing, explains her experiences with devas. It also shares parts of her life story. A longer book about her life, Memoirs of an Ordinary Mystic, was published in 2010.

Later Years

Dorothy left Findhorn in 1973. She then started an educational group in North America with David Spangler.

Her childhood home, called Woodside, in Guelph, Ontario, has been recognized as a special heritage building.

Dorothy stopped her public work in 2010 and moved back to Findhorn. She was 92 years old when the Findhorn Foundation celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012. She turned 100 years old in January 2020 and passed away shortly after, on March 12, 2020, in Findhorn.
