Doug Spencer Bowser (born August 11, 1965) is an American businessman. He is currently the president of Nintendo of America. This is the part of the famous Japanese video game company Nintendo that handles things in North America. He took over as president in 2019, after Reggie Fils-Aimé retired. Before joining Nintendo, Doug Bowser worked at companies like Procter & Gamble and Electronic Arts.
Doug Bowser's Early Career
Doug Bowser was born in Upstate New York on August 11, 1965. He went to the University of Utah and earned a degree in communications in 1984.
After college, he worked at Procter & Gamble from 1984 to 2007. This company makes many everyday products. He held different roles there, including helping with marketing in Latin America.
Later, from 2007 to 2015, Bowser worked at Electronic Arts (EA). EA is a big video game company known for games like FIFA and Madden NFL. At EA, he was a vice president, helping to plan how games would be sold around the world.
Leading Nintendo of America
Doug Bowser joined Nintendo of America in 2015. He started as the vice president of sales and marketing. In 2016, he was promoted to senior vice president. In this role, he helped launch the very popular Nintendo Switch console in North America.
In February 2019, the president of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aimé, announced he was retiring. Doug Bowser was chosen to be his successor. He officially became president in April 2019. Besides his duties at Nintendo, Bowser also represents the company for the Entertainment Software Association. This group works for the video game industry.
The Name Coincidence
Doug Bowser shares his last name with the main bad guy from the Mario games, Bowser. This was a funny coincidence when he first joined Nintendo. People online found it even funnier when he became president.
The BBC news even called it "one of the most charming cases of nominative determinism ever." This means when someone's name seems to fit their job or destiny. Nintendo itself has joked about the name similarity. They even did it during their E3 2019 Nintendo Direct presentation.
Doug Bowser says he doesn't mind the jokes. He thinks it shows that Nintendo has amazing and passionate fans. He said, "It's ironic that we share the same name, and there are times when it'll be fun and we'll play with it, but we're two very, very different characters. I'm not tired of it at all though."
