Douglas Theodore Pinnick (born September 3, 1950), also known as dUg Pinnick, is an American musician. He is famous as the bass guitarist, singer, and songwriter for the rock band King's X. He has played on 15 albums with King's X. He has also released four solo albums. Doug is known for his unique singing voice and his powerful bass sound. He often uses a guitar pick to play his bass.

Doug Pinnick's Early Life and Music
Doug Pinnick was born in Braidwood, Illinois. When he was 14, his family moved to Joliet, Illinois. He grew up in a very musical family. Everyone in his family either sang or played an instrument.
As a child, Doug sang in the choir. He also played the saxophone. When he was a teenager, he listened to R&B and Motown artists. These included Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin. He sang in bands during high school. One early band was called Stone Flower.
In 1969, Doug went to Joliet Junior College. He was inspired by rock bands like Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. He also loved Sly & the Family Stone. His dream was to create a band that mixed all these different music styles.
After about six months of college, Doug left to join a gospel band called The Spurrlows. Later, in the early 1970s, he lived in a Christian community in Florida. There, he helped promote shows for Christian rock bands. He then moved back to Illinois.
Forming Bands and Finding His Sound
In the mid-1970s, Doug formed a band called Servant. They played progressive rock music. This was similar to bands like Yes. They made demo songs. Later, another band with the same name got a record deal.
In 1979, Doug was asked to join a new band in Springfield, Missouri. He moved there, but the band quickly broke up. Soon after, he joined guitarist Phil Keaggy's touring band. Jerry Gaskill was also in this band as the drummer. Doug toured with Phil Keaggy for about a year.
Doug then met guitarist Ty Tabor in Springfield. Later, Jerry Gaskill joined them. They formed a band called The Edge. In 1983, they changed their name to Sneak Preview. They released an album called Sneak Preview. This trio eventually became King's X after moving to Houston, Texas.
Since then, Doug Pinnick has become a very respected musician in rock music. Many other artists want to work with him. He has joined many side projects and made guest appearances on albums.
Doug also has his own studio in Texas called Hound Pound. He now lives in Los Angeles. In 2018, Doug played bass for a special tour. This tour celebrated the 50th anniversary of the band MC5's album Kick Out the Jams. He played with famous musicians like Kim Thayil from Soundgarden.
Doug Pinnick's Other Music Projects
Doug Pinnick has worked on many different music projects outside of King's X.
Solo Music and Poundhound
His first solo project was called Poundhound. He released two albums under this name: Massive Grooves and Pineappleskunk. His King's X bandmate, Jerry Gaskill, played drums on some of these songs.
For his third solo album, Emotional Animal, he used his own name, "dUg Pinnick." He released his fourth solo album, Strum Sum Up, in 2007. He has continued to release solo albums, including Naked (2013), Tribute to Jimi (2018), Joy Bomb (2021), and Thingamajigger (2024).
Other Bands and Collaborations
Doug was also part of a band called Supershine. They released one album in 2000. He sang lead vocals for The Mob on their album in 2005. He also filled in as lead singer for Living Colour on their European tour in 2006.
Doug has sung on songs for many other artists. These include Dream Theater's "Lines in the Sand" and a Kiss tribute album. He also sang on a Beatles tribute album called Butchering the Beatles. In 2008, he appeared on a holiday album called We Wish You a Metal Xmas..., singing "Little Drummer Boy."
Doug also plays with Ty Tabor and former Galactic Cowboys members in a group called The Jibbs. They released a song to help with Hurricane Ike relief efforts. He sang all the lead vocals on Razr 13's album "Reflections" in 2009.
Doug's side project, Tres Mts., includes Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam. They released their album, Three Mountains, in 2011. He also sang backup on a Pearl Jam song during a concert in 1994.
In 2013, Doug released an album called Pinnick Gales Pridgen. This project featured Eric Gales on guitar and Thomas Pridgen on drums. They released a second album, PGP 2, in 2014.
Doug also formed a band called 3rd Ear Experience. They released two albums, Peacock Black and Boi, in 2013.
In 2014, Doug's all-star project KXM released their first album. This band includes George Lynch from Dokken and Ray Luzier from Korn. Also in 2014, Doug's band Grinder Blues released their first record.
Doug Pinnick's Musical Gear
Doug Pinnick is known for playing a special kind of bass guitar. It's called a 12-string bass. This bass has four sets of three strings, like a 12-string guitar. He uses a custom-made 12-string bass from Yamaha.
He used Ampeg amplifiers for a long time. Now, Tech 21 has released a special bass amp head named after him, called the dUg Ultra bass 1000. In 2018, Tech21 also released a signature pedal based on his amp. He uses a complex setup with many equalizers and amplifiers. He also uses a Line 6 POD pro for effects.
