Doug Pinnick's Early Life and Music

Doug Pinnick was born in Braidwood, Illinois. When he was 14, his family moved to Joliet, Illinois. He grew up in a very musical family. Everyone in his family either sang or played an instrument.

As a child, Doug sang in the choir. He also played the saxophone. When he was a teenager, he listened to R&B and Motown artists. These included Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin. He sang in bands during high school. One early band was called Stone Flower.

In 1969, Doug went to Joliet Junior College. He was inspired by rock bands like Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. He also loved Sly & the Family Stone. His dream was to create a band that mixed all these different music styles.

After about six months of college, Doug left to join a gospel band called The Spurrlows. Later, in the early 1970s, he lived in a Christian community in Florida. There, he helped promote shows for Christian rock bands. He then moved back to Illinois.

Forming Bands and Finding His Sound

In the mid-1970s, Doug formed a band called Servant. They played progressive rock music. This was similar to bands like Yes. They made demo songs. Later, another band with the same name got a record deal.

In 1979, Doug was asked to join a new band in Springfield, Missouri. He moved there, but the band quickly broke up. Soon after, he joined guitarist Phil Keaggy's touring band. Jerry Gaskill was also in this band as the drummer. Doug toured with Phil Keaggy for about a year.

Doug then met guitarist Ty Tabor in Springfield. Later, Jerry Gaskill joined them. They formed a band called The Edge. In 1983, they changed their name to Sneak Preview. They released an album called Sneak Preview. This trio eventually became King's X after moving to Houston, Texas.

Since then, Doug Pinnick has become a very respected musician in rock music. Many other artists want to work with him. He has joined many side projects and made guest appearances on albums.
