Carmine Appice (born December 15, 1946) is a famous American rock drummer. He is well-known for playing with bands like Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, and the power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice. He also played drums for the singer Rod Stewart. Carmine is the older brother of Vinny Appice, who is also a drummer.

Carmine Appice is a very respected drummer. He was added to the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2014. He also joined the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2014. Besides drums, he can play the bass guitar too.

Carmine wrote a best-selling drum instruction book called The Realistic Rock Drum Method. It was first published in 1972. Later, it was updated and renamed The Ultimate Realistic Rock Drum Method. This book teaches rock rhythms, special drum patterns, and exercises for the hi-hat and double bass drum. Carmine has said that he influenced John Bonham, the drummer for Led Zeppelin, in how he used bass drum triplets.

Carmine's Music Journey

Carmine Appice learned classical music when he was young. He was inspired by jazz drummers like Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa. Carmine first became famous as the drummer for the band Vanilla Fudge in the late 1960s. He and bassist Tim Bogert sang great background harmonies.

After making five albums, Carmine and Tim left Vanilla Fudge. They formed a new blues rock band called Cactus. This band included singer Rusty Day and guitarist Jim McCarty. Later, Appice and Bogert left Cactus to join Jeff Beck in the power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice.

Playing with Rod Stewart

In 1976, Carmine joined Rod Stewart's band. ..... He also played drums on a song for Paul Stanley's solo album in 1978.

Carmine was also a member of a band called KGB. This group had musicians like Ray Kennedy and Mike Bloomfield. He has recorded music with many artists, including Stanley Clarke, Ted Nugent, and even Pink Floyd. He also played with King Kobra and Blue Murder. In 1983, Carmine toured with Ozzy Osbourne for his album Bark at the Moon.

Later Projects and Collaborations

In 1995, Carmine recorded an album called Caso Cerrado with Argentine guitarist Pappo. His old bandmate Tim Bogert also played bass on some songs. In 1999, Carmine toured Japan with Bogert and Char in a group called CB&A. They released a live album the next year.

In 2000, Appice formed another power trio called DBA with Bogert and Rick Derringer. He also reunited with Bogert when they brought back Vanilla Fudge.

Helping Young Musicians

In 2005, Carmine became a supporter of Little Kids Rock. This is a group that gives free musical instruments and lessons to children in public schools. He has given instruments to kids in the program himself. He has also played at concerts to raise money for the organization. He is on their special board of directors.

In 2006, Carmine started a drum group called SLAMM. He played drums with four young drummers. People described their show as "Stomp on steroids." The band made a video for the TV channel ESPN. They used a NASCAR garage as their set and mechanics' tools as instruments. SLAMM was voted second best Percussion Ensemble by Drum magazine in 2008. They also appeared on the Modern Drummer festival DVD in 2008.

Guitar Zeus and Other Albums

In 2009, Carmine released Carmine Appice's Guitar Zeus: Conquering Heroes. This was the third album in his Guitar Zeus series. These albums feature amazing guitarists like Jennifer Batten, Brian May, Ted Nugent, and Yngwie Malmsteen.

He also played drums on the Sly Stone CD I'm Back! Family & Friends. He played on the classic song "Stand!" This album came out on August 16, 2011.

From 2011 to 2012, Carmine performed "Drum Wars" shows with his brother Vinny Appice. He also reformed King Kobra with some original members. This lineup released an album called King Kobra in April 2011. A new King Kobra album, King Kobra II, came out in 2013.

In 2016, Carmine Appice published his book, Stick It!: My Life of ..., Drums & Rock 'n' Roll. In 2021, Appice released Energy Overload. This album was a collaboration with musician Fernando Perdomo.

Personal Life

On May 23, 1981, the Mayor of Los Angeles, Tom Bradley, declared it "Carmine Appice Day" in the city. This was to honor Carmine's charity work and his efforts in music education.

Carmine Appice lives in New York with his longtime girlfriend, radio personality Leslie Gold.

How to Say "Appice"

Carmine's last name, Appice, can be tricky to say! Both he and his brother Vinny say it a little differently. The correct way to say it is "app-uh-cee." Carmine has heard people call him "a-piece," "a-pice," or "a-peach-ee."

When he worked with Rod Stewart, Rod asked him how to say it. Carmine told him that most people say "a-piece," even though it's not quite right. So, they decided to just go with "a-piece." There was even an advertisement that said, "Everyone wants a piece of the Appice," which made everyone call him "a-piece." But when his brother Vinny joined Black Sabbath, he used the correct pronunciation, "app-uh-cee." Carmine says this "confused everybody, and the confusion is still going on."
