Douglas Smith, born on September 17, 1969, is a former American professional basketball player. He was chosen by the Dallas Mavericks as the sixth player picked in the 1991 NBA draft. This was a big deal, showing he was one of the top young players in the country.

Doug Smith's College Basketball Journey

Doug Smith finished Mackenzie High School in Detroit in 1987. After high school, he played college basketball for the University of Missouri. He was an amazing player there! His jersey number, 34, was even retired by the university. This means no other player at the University of Missouri will ever wear the number 34 again. It's a special honor for outstanding athletes.

Playing in the NBA and Beyond

Doug Smith played in the NBA for five seasons. He played for the Dallas Mavericks from 1991 to 1995. Then, he joined the Boston Celtics for the 1995-1996 season. During his time in the NBA, he scored an average of 8.0 points per game.

Moving to Other Leagues

After his time in the NBA, Doug continued to play professional basketball. He played in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). In 1998, he was named to the All-CBA Second Team while playing for the Quad City Thunder. This showed he was still a top player in that league.

Representing His Country

Doug Smith also had the chance to play for the US national team. He competed in the 1990 FIBA World Championship. His team did very well, winning the bronze medal for third place. This is a great achievement for any athlete!
