Early Life of Doughbeezy
Tai Carr was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1986. He grew up mostly with his mother after his parents separated. When he was 13, he and his mother moved to Southeast Houston, Texas.
He started rapping when he was 15. He got his nickname Doughbeezy by rapping for fun in freestyle battles with friends at his high school. Doughbeezy said that people would even skip their lunch to watch these freestyle sessions.
Doughbeezy's Music Career
Early Years and Mixtapes (2010–2013)
When he was a teenager, Doughbeezy started doing rap features while living near Houston in Webster, Texas. He worked for a short time with a local rap group called The TMI Boys. They even made a song with Manny Fresh.
Doughbeezy decided not to sign a big contract with that group. Instead, he stayed local, with support from his friends and his manager, Al Hughes. In his early days, he often performed three or more shows in one night.
In 2010, Doughbeezy entered "The Best Rapper in Texas" contest. He didn't win the first time, but he won the next three contests in a row. After his fourth entry, he decided to stop competing. Around that time, he also started going to "Kickback Sundays." This is an underground music event held weekly at a clothing store in Houston.
In 2010, he released his first collection of songs, called an EP, titled No Money, No Conversation. It was released through Headwreckas Worldwide. His first full mixtape, Reggie Bush and Kool-Aid, came out in April 2011. The Houston Press said in 2011 that Doughbeezy's rap style was "polished" and enjoyable.
Doughbeezy's second full mixtape, Blue Magic, was released in March 2012. It featured other rappers like Bun B, Slim Thug, Kirko Bangz, Killa Kyleon, and Chalie Boy.
His third album, Footprints On the Moon, was released in February 2013. Before it came out, the Houston Press called it one of the "most anticipated Houston rap releases." This album had 16 songs and featured eight other rappers. The Austin Chronicle gave it a good review, saying that Doughbeezy's fast and unique voice was still great even by the end of the album.
In early 2013, MTV Hive recognized him as one of the top 5 rising artists in Houston. He was also nominated for two awards at the 2013 Houston Press Music Awards. These nominations were for "local musician of the year" and "best solo rapper."
Collaborations and Touring (2013–Present)
Doughbeezy has worked with many musicians on their songs. For example, he worked with Emilio Rojas and with Killa Kyleon on the 2013 song and album Watch Chrome. He has also released several music videos, including one for his 2013 song "Ridin' Round."
He is the co-CEO of the music company Headwreckas Worldwide. He shares this role with his manager, Al Hughes, who started the company.
Doughbeezy performs live very often. He has toured with rappers like Dom Kennedy. He performed at the SXSW music festival in 2012, 2013, and 2014. In 2012 and 2013, he also performed at the A3C Hip Hop Festival. In 2013, he was part of the Houston Free Press Summer Fest. In 2014, he performed at the SCOPE Show's first "Unplugged Series."
