While at Prairie View A&M University, Kirko Bangz focused on his music. In 2009, he released his first mixtape, called Procrastination Kills. He met D Will, who later became his manager, while they were both students. His stage name, Kirko Bangz, is a nod to the famous singer Kurt Cobain.

Kirko Bangz signed with Warner Records. He released his first official song, "What Yo Name Iz?", on February 7, 2011. He said the song started as a freestyle rap. It reached number 41 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. A new version of the song came out on June 24, 2011, featuring other rappers like Big Sean, Wale, and Bun B. He then released another mixtape, Procrastination Kills 3, on March 1, 2011.

His second popular song was released on September 16, 2011. This song became a big hit, entering the Billboard Hot 100 chart in February 2012 and eventually reaching number 28. It also topped the Hot Rap Songs chart. Many other hip-hop artists, including J. Cole, 2 Chainz, and Trey Songz, created their own versions of the song. Kirko Bangz released the mixtape Procrastination Kills 4 on September 4, 2012. His song "Keep It Trill" came out on November 30, 2012.

New Labels and Projects (2013–Present)

On March 26, 2013, Kirko Bangz was chosen as one of XXL Magazine's "Freshman Class" artists, which highlights new and rising hip-hop stars. A few days later, he announced the name of his first album, Bigger Than Me. He also planned to release another mixtape, Progression 3, before his album. This mixtape was released on August 12, 2013. It featured guest artists like Wale, Nipsey Hussle, and French Montana.

Later, Kirko Bangz moved to Atlantic Records, which is also part of Warner Music Group. On January 28, 2014, he released a song called "Hoe," featuring YG and Yo Gotti. This song was meant to be the first single from his major album. From March to April 2014, Kirko Bangz went on "The Trillest" concert tour with Bun B.

Kirko Bangz has mentioned that much of his unreleased music is owned by Warner Music Group, which makes it difficult for him to put it out.

On August 31, 2015, Bangz released his first extended play (EP), called Fallin' Up Mix. An EP is a shorter music release than an album. On February 19, 2016, he released his second EP, titled Playa Made. Then, on August 26, 2016, Kirko Bangz released the mixtape Back Flossin'. On August 10, 2017, he released another part of his Progression series, called Progression 17.
