He met D Will, who later became his manager, during his studies. His stage name, Kirko Bangz, is a nod to the famous singer Kurt Cobain.

He signed with Warner Records and released his first official song, "What Yo Name Iz?", on February 7, 2011. This song started as a freestyle rap, which means he made up the lyrics on the spot. It reached number 41 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. A new version of the song came out on June 24, 2011. It featured other artists like Big Sean, Wale, and Bun B. He then released another mixtape, Procrastination Kills 3, on March 1, 2011.

His second song, "Drank in My Cup", was released on September 16, 2011. This song became a big hit. It reached number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also topped the Hot Rap Songs chart.
