Where is Dover Mall Located?
The Dover Mall is found along U.S. Route 13 in the northern part of Dover. It's the only large enclosed mall in the Dover area.
You'll find it near some other cool places. It's close to the Dover International Speedway and Dover Downs. It's also right across the street from Delaware State University. Getting to the mall is easy, and you can even take a DART First State bus (routes 108, 109, and 112) to get there.
What Can You Find at Dover Mall?
The Dover Mall is a single-level shopping center. It has about 79 different stores for you to explore.
The main stores, called "anchor stores," include JCPenney, Boscov's, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Old Navy. There's also a spot where Sears used to be, and the old Macy's store is now used as a shipping center.
After shopping, you can relax at the food court or watch a movie at the 14-screen AMC Classic. Plus, Delaware offers tax-free shopping, which means you don't pay extra taxes on most things you buy!
A Look Back: Dover Mall's History
The Dover Mall first opened its doors in 1982. It was the second big indoor mall in Dover. Before it, there was the Blue Hen Mall. The Dover Mall was built because Sears wanted a new location and couldn't agree on a spot at the Blue Hen Mall. When Dover Mall opened, it became very popular, and the Blue Hen Mall became less busy.
When it first opened, the main stores were Boscov's, Leggett, and Sears. The Boscov's store here was special because it was the first one outside of Pennsylvania.
Changes Over the Years
The mall has changed quite a bit over time!
- In 1992, the mall got a makeover.
- JCPenney moved to the Dover Mall in 1993, becoming another big store.
- Later that year, the Dover Mall was the first mall in Delaware to ban smoking inside.
- In 1997, Leggett closed, and a new store called Strawbridge's opened in its place.
- Around the same time, Boscov's and Sears also updated their stores.
- In 1999, the movie theater, then called Carmike Cinemas, added more screens, going from six to fourteen. The food court also got bigger and was updated. In 2017, Carmike Cinemas became AMC Classic.
New Owners and Stores
In 2003, a company called The Mills Corporation bought the mall. They even thought about adding more stores and fun places.
- In 2006, the Strawbridge's store changed into a Macy's.
- Then, in 2007, Simon Property Group bought the mall. They still own and manage it today.
- In 2013, the Dover Mall welcomed several new stores, including a big Dick's Sporting Goods store.
