The Downtown Concord Historic District is a special area in Concord, New Hampshire, United States. It includes most of the main business part of the city. Concord became a city in 1734. It was chosen as the state capital in 1808. Later, in 1823, it became the main city for Merrimack County.
Concord grew a lot because of these government buildings. It also grew thanks to factories along the Merrimack River. The river flows east of the downtown area. When the railroad arrived in the 1840s, the city grew even more. The New Hampshire State House was built in 1819. This building is where the state government works. It was built south of the old city center. The main shopping street, now called Main Street, started to grow there. This historic district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. This means it's a very important place to protect.

What is the Downtown Concord Historic District?
This historic district is mainly along North and South Main Street. It stretches from Loudon Road/Centre Street in the north to Hills Avenue in the south. It also includes some buildings on North State Street. These are between Pleasant and School streets. A few buildings on the side streets, one block from Main Street, are also part of it.
What is Not Included?
It's important to know that the New Hampshire State House is not in this district. Its surrounding area is part of a different historic district. That one is called the Concord Civic District.
What Kind of Buildings Are There?
Most of the buildings in this district were built in the second half of the 1800s. This was a time of great growth.
Oldest Buildings in the Area
The oldest wooden building is the Upham-Walker House. It was built in 1819 on Park Street. This house is so special that it's listed separately on the National Register. The first brick business building in Concord is also here. It's the Merrimack County Bank building at 47 North Main Street. It was built in 1808. It was changed a lot in the 1860s. This building is also listed separately as important.
Building Boom in the 1800s
After the railroad came to Concord, there was a lot of building. Many of the brick buildings you see on Main Street today were built in the 1850s and 1860s. This shows how important the railroad was for the city's growth.
