Doğan Kardeş was a special publishing company and a magazine for children in Turkey. It was named after a young boy named Doğan.

Doğan was a 10-year-old boy. He was studying in Flims, Switzerland when he sadly died in an avalanche on April 10, 1939. His father, Kazım Taşkent, who started Yapı Kredi Bank, created the publishing company to remember his son.

The Doğan Kardeş Magazine

The publishing company began publishing a magazine especially for children. It was called Doğan Kardeş Dergisi. Vedat Nedim Tör was its editor. This magazine was published during three different periods.

Magazine Publication Periods

The first time the magazine was published was between April 1945 and July 1978. During this period, 1174 issues were released. The second time was from October 1988 to December 1993, with 63 issues. The third period was from February 2008 to March 2011, with 38 issues. Doğan Kardeş Dergisi helped many children who later became famous musicians. Some of these talented people include Suna Kan and İdil Biret.

The Elephant Campaign

In 1949, the prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, sent an elephant to Japan. The next year, Doğan Kardeş started a campaign. They wanted to bring an elephant to Turkish zoos. They even published an open letter to Nehru. Children were asked to draw pictures of an elephant in Turkey.

The campaign was a big success! Nehru sent a 2-year-old elephant as a gift to Turkish children. They named her Mohini, which means "sugar elephant." The cover of the Doğan Kardeş magazine on May 4, 1950, showed a drawing by Selma Emiroğlu. She was the first female cartoonist in Turkey. Her drawing showed Mohini's welcoming ceremony.

The Doğan Kardeş Publication Company also released other magazines. These included:

  • Aile ("Family"): Published between 1947 and 1952, with 23 issues.
  • Hayat ("Life"): Published between 1956 and 1979. This was Turkey's first intaglio magazine. Şevket Rado was its editor.
  • Bizler ("We"): Started in 1973 for people working at Yapı Kredi.
  • Sanat Dünyamız ("Our Art World"): Started in 1974.
  • Yapı Kredi Economic Review: An English magazine started in 1986.

Besides magazines, Doğan Kardeş Publishing Company also translated and published many famous books into Turkish. The first example was 17 stories by Leo Tolstoy in 1946. By 1988, they had published over 500 books!

Later, the bank's shares were sold. Because of this, the publishing company changed its name. After 1989, it became known as Yapı Kredi Publishing Company.
