Dragon Flyz is an animated TV show that aired from 1996 to 1997. It was created by Savin Yeatman-Eiffel and made by Gaumont Multimédia and Abrams/Gentile Entertainment. The show is all about brave humans who ride dragons. They go on exciting search-and-rescue missions. There are 26 episodes in total.
Story of Dragon Flyz
The story of Dragon Flyz takes place far in the future, in the 41st century. A big event called "The Cataclysm" changed Earth forever. Now, the planet is mostly a harsh wasteland. There are rivers of lava and dangerous storms.
The remaining humans live in a special city that floats in the sky. It is called "Airlandis". From Airlandis, brave dragon riders, known as the Dragonators, fly down to Earth. They need to find special purple crystals called "Amber". These crystals are the fuel that keeps Airlandis running. They usually find Amber in lava pools or in the ground.
The "Cataclysm" was a huge disaster. It destroyed most of Earth's life. Only a few safe spots, called "Oases", remain. The skies above Earth are very dangerous. They have constant lightning storms and acidic clouds. These are known as the "Warp Winds". The only safe paths through them are inside hollow mountains, called "Wind Pits".
Airlandis is a golden city that floats high above the ground. It has five large "bio-spheres" in the middle. These spheres are like mini-habitats. They keep different animal species safe that were rescued from the Cataclysm. The most important part of Airlandis is its "power core". An engineer named Orac makes sure it always has enough Amber. Airlandis also has a runway for dragons and a special place for them to rest. There is a Council Chamber for leaders and a Control Room called "Skywatch". This room helps monitor the city and the skies. There is also a prison. Some people in Airlandis hope to find a safe place to live on the surface again. In one episode, we learn that some humans escaped the Cataclysm on a space station. The main characters' mother lives there.
Main Characters
All the main characters, good or bad, ride dragons into battle. They can also fly short distances themselves. The Dragonators use special "Exo-wings". These wings pop out from their armor. Dreadwing and his followers, the Dramen, have wings that grow from their shoulders. Both types of wings disappear after they finish flying.
The Dragonators' main weapon is the "Wind Jammer". This is a wrist-mounted device that shoots blue energy bolts. Dreadwing and his followers use glove-like cannons. These cannons launch balls or streams of lava. All four main heroes have names related to height or being high up.

She can even partly control half-dragons like the Dramen. When she uses her powers, her eyes and the subject's eyes glow silver. Her name means "the uppermost tip of a triangle".
Peak
- Callsign: Dragonator Four
- Hair Colour: Blond
- Armor Color: Orange/Purple
- Dragon Steed: Wingstorm, or "Storm"

Amod
- Callsign: Dragonator Five
- Hair Colour: Blonde

Aaron
- Hair Colour: White
- Armor Colour: Red
Aaron is the father of the four main heroes. He often gives them advice. He cannot walk and floats above the ground instead. This floating is likely controlled by his staff, which has an Amber crystal. He strongly believes in finding a safe place on Earth's surface for everyone to live.
Orac
Orac is an engineer. He takes care of Airlandis's power generator. He is usually grumpy. He always wears his uniform and gloves.
Councillor Joshua
Councillor Joshua is a leader in Airlandis's government. He often disagrees with Aaron. He wants what's best for the people. But his impatience causes problems. He even has Summit put in prison, which lets Dreadwing take control of the city.
Mutant Characters
Dreadwing
- Skin Colour: Red
- Dragon Steed: Blackheart
Dreadwing is the main bad guy in the story. He lives in a mechanical cave complex called "Warnado". He is a powerful villain with a gargoyle-like look. His home is a harsh place. He is sometimes called a 'Fallen Angel'.
Nocturna
- Skin Colour: Cyan
- Dragon Steed: Unnamed
Nocturna is Dreadwing's second-in-command. She serves Dreadwing because she wants her own territory. When Dreadwing offers her an Oasis, she accepts. She gets angry when he destroys it. Her dragon looks like her and has a similar crest on its head. She sometimes seems to like Z'neth. This makes her let the heroes go or even help them once in a while.
Fryte
- Skin Colour: brown
- Dragon Steed: Skunk
Fryte is a hunchbacked servant of Dreadwing. He is very loyal to his master. Like Nocturna, his dragon looks like him.
Gangryn
Gangryn is a mutant scientist who works for Dreadwing. He is ambitious but old and bent over. He will quickly switch sides if it helps him.
The Gremwings
Gremwings are two-legged, insect-like creatures. They are known for their loud screeches and huge mouths. They are very strong. They serve Dreadwing in large groups. There are different types of Gremwings. Some have one eye and are bat-like. They help Dreadwing gather information. Others feed on blood.
The Dramen
- Skin Colour: Purple/Grey
- Dragon Steed: Unnamed
The Dramen are large, gargoyle-like humanoids. They can grow wings from their bodies whenever they want. Dreadwing's Dramen sometimes help him and his lieutenants while riding dragons.
Dram
- Callsign: None
- Skin Colour: Orange/Brown
- Armor Color: Dark Brown
- Dragon Steed: Titan
Dram is a Dramen who was raised by Aaron. His village was mysteriously destroyed. Because he is loyal to the humans, other Dramen call him a 'traitor'. This makes him upset. His dragon, Titan, doesn't appear often. Dram usually prefers to fly using his own wings. He always keeps up with his friends.
Vydak
Vydak appears twice in the series. He is the leader of a group of brown-skinned Dark Dramen. His clan destroyed Dram's village and killed his family. Later, he enslaved another clan. Dreadwing tries to make an alliance with him, but it fails when Dram tries to rescue the enslaved villagers. In his second appearance, Vydak's warriors meet Dreadwing's army. Both leaders plan to betray each other.
Dragons of Dragon Flyz
There are three main types of dragons in the show. The most common are the Airlandian/Wild dragons. They have smooth, snake-like bodies, long necks and tails, and sharp teeth. Their wings are like those of a pterosaur. Each dragon can be told apart by its color and head shape.
The second type is large and strong, with four legs and short necks. Fryte, Kreigo, and Nocturna ride these. The third type is only Blackheart. He has features of both other types. He is unusually large and can eat lava. This lets him breathe fire. All dragons are very smart and seem to understand everything said to them. They are always loyal to their riders.
Airlandian dragons live in a huge hangar-like station when they are not flying. It has nesting areas and a small natural environment with a lake. When on duty, they are very disciplined. They never leave their riders.
Riptor
Rider: Z'Neth
Riptor is the strongest Airlandian dragon. He is seen as the leader of the dragons. He has a larger nesting area, a collar, and crest armor. He is blue with a horn on his nose and two large crests. Riptor and Blackheart are rivals. Riptor is one of only two dragons (and the only Airlandian dragon) strong enough to fight Blackheart.
Sky Fury
Rider: Summit
Sky Fury, or "Fury", is a green female dragon with two brown horns. She is the only female dragon ridden by the main heroes. She is not afraid to act without being told.
Fury's Cub
Rider: Unknown
This is a small, green dragon born early in the series. We don't know who his father is. When he was still an egg, Nocturna captured him for Dreadwing. Gangryn changed him in an experiment. When he hatched, he could shoot a paralyzing blast. Dreadwing tried to use this power as a weapon. But Sky Fury convinced the baby dragon to join her. After that, Fury and her son became very close.
Wing Storm
Rider: Peak
Wing Storm, or "Storm", is a young, steel-grey dragon. He has a spiky head and a long mouth with sharp points. Both Wing Storm and Peak are daring. But Storm is usually more careful than Peak.
Blazewind
Rider: Apex
Blazewind, or "Blaze", is a white dragon with a black mane. He is closer to his rider than most dragons. This is because Apex can talk to him using her mind.
Blackheart
Rider: Dreadwing
Blackheart is a huge, four-legged dragon with a long neck and red scales. He can eat lava and breathe fire. Riptor is usually the only dragon who can match him in power. But he was once beaten by the leader of a group of Wild Dragons. That dragon was a bit bigger and could also breathe fire.

Dragon Flyz Toys and Videos
There were two sets of Dragon Flyz toys made by Galoob. One set included the main characters with spinning wings that let them fly. It also came with a dragon-shaped launcher and a DVD. The second set didn't have the DVD, and the launcher wasn't shaped like a dragon. Some toys were just riders, others were dragons that flapped their own wings. Some figures even lit up when launched. Most rider figures had weapon toys. Galoob also made similar toys for girls called Sky Dancers.
You could also buy Dragon Flyz on VHS tapes. There were four tapes, each with one episode. There was also a special VHS called "Dragon Flyz: The Legend Begins" which had the first three episodes. Later, two DVDs were released in Europe, each with three episodes. The whole series can now be watched officially on YouTube by Mondo World.
