Dragonworld is a fantasy film released in 1994. It was made for families and went straight to video. The movie was directed by Ted Nicolaou. It was one of the first films from Moonbeam Entertainment. This company is known for making family-friendly movies.

Story of Dragonworld

The movie begins in modern times. A five-year-old boy named Johnny McGowan moves to Scotland. He goes to live in his grandfather's old castle. This happens after Johnny sadly loses both his parents.

At the castle, there is a special "wish tree." Johnny makes a wish there. He wishes for a friend. Suddenly, a baby dragon appears! Johnny names his new dragon friend "Yowler."

Johnny and Yowler grow up together. Fifteen years pass, and Johnny is now a teenager. One day, a filmmaker named Bob Armstrong discovers Yowler. Bob is making a documentary. His daughter, Beth, and pilot, Brownie McGee, are with him.

Bob sees a chance for fame and money. He convinces Johnny to "rent" Yowler to a local businessman. This man is Lester McIntyre. Johnny agrees because he needs money to keep his castle. He also likes Beth.

Yowler is very unhappy at McIntyre's new amusement park. He is treated badly and exploited. Johnny soon realizes that McIntyre tricked them. So, Johnny and his new friends decide to act. They plan to rescue Yowler from the park.

Meet the Cast

Here are some of the main actors in Dragonworld:

  • Sam Mackenzie plays the older Johnny McGowan.
    • Courtland Mead plays Johnny when he is young.

Filming Locations

The movie was filmed in some really cool places. Haddon Hall and Manorbier Castle were used for the castle scenes. These are historic buildings in the United Kingdom.

The Llangollen railway station was also used. This station pretended to be the Scottish station. It's where young Johnny first meets his grandfather.

The Sequel

A second movie, Dragonworld: The Legend Continues, came out in 1999. It was also released straight to video. Even though it was released in 1999, it was filmed earlier in 1996. This sequel doesn't have much connection to the first film. Most critics did not like it very much.
