Dromaneen Castle is an old fortified house and a National Monument located in County Cork, Ireland. A fortified house is like a strong home built to protect its owners.
What is Dromaneen Castle?
Dromaneen Castle was one of the three main castles of the O’Callaghan clan. This was an important family group from a long time ago. The castle you see today is mostly the ruins of a grand house. It was built around 1610 by a person named Caher O’Callaghan.
A Look Back in Time
The castle was built to replace an even older building. This older building was probably a tall tower house. In 1642, an important visitor, the Papal Nuncio Rinunicci, was welcomed here. Sadly, the castle was destroyed in 1652. This happened during a time of war in Ireland called the Irish Confederate Wars. The castle was not defended during this time. Later, different people like Sir Richard Herrill and Sir Richard Kyrle owned it.
Where is Dromaneen Castle Located?
Dromaneen Castle is found about 5.3 kilometers (3.3 miles) west of Mallow. It sits on the south bank of the Munster Blackwater river.
