Dryden is a small community in Lee County, Virginia, United States. It's a place where the U.S. Census Bureau counts people, even though it's not an official town or city. In 2010, about 1,208 people lived there.

History of Dryden

Dryden got its name from a railroad official named Captain Dryden. The community's post office, where people send and receive mail, first opened in 1879. This was an important step for the community to grow and connect with other places.

Geography of Dryden

Dryden is located in the northeastern part of Lee County. You can find it near U.S. Route 58 Alternate, which is a main road. It's northeast of a place called Pennington Gap and southwest of Big Stone Gap.

The southern edge of Dryden touches the Powell River. This river is a natural boundary for the community. Also, parts of the Jefferson National Forest are located to the north of Dryden. This means there are beautiful forests and nature nearby.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the total area of Dryden is about 18.6 square kilometers (about 7.2 square miles). Most of this area, about 18.3 square kilometers (7.1 square miles), is land. The rest, about 0.3 square kilometers (0.1 square miles), is water, mostly from the Powell River.

People of Dryden

In 2000, there were 1,253 people living in Dryden. These people lived in 453 homes, and 329 of these were families. The community had about 176 people per square mile.
