Dubble Bubble is a famous American bubble gum. It has a fruity flavor and is usually pink. Walter Diemer, an accountant at Fleer Chewing Gum Company, invented it in 1928. He loved trying out new gum recipes.
The company's founder, Frank H. Fleer, had tried making bubble gum in 1906. His gum was called Blibber-Blubber. But it was too sticky and fell apart easily. So, it was put aside. Twenty years later, Diemer used this old idea as a starting point for his own invention.

The Sweet Story of Dubble Bubble
How Dubble Bubble Was Invented
The Fleer Chewing Gum Company in Philadelphia had been trying for years. They wanted to make a gum that could blow bubbles without being too sticky. In 1928, Walter Diemer was testing new gum recipes. He noticed his new gum was less sticky than regular chewing gum.
He tested it and found he could easily blow bubbles. After a year of trying, he made the first successful batch of bubble gum. But the next morning, he couldn't make it again! It took him four more months to finally recreate his success. He made a huge 300-pound batch. This would become Dubble Bubble.
The only food coloring available at the factory was pink. So, Diemer had to use it. This pink color then became the standard for bubble gum all over the world. Diemer used a machine that wrapped salt water taffy. He decided to wrap 100 pieces of gum individually. He took them to a local candy store. The gum cost one penny each. It sold out in just one day!
Soon, Fleer Chewing Gum Company started making bubble gum using Diemer's recipe. The gum was sold as “Dubble Bubble” gum. Diemer's bubble gum was the first bubble gum ever sold in stores. Its sales reached over 1.5 million dollars in its first year. To help sell the new gum, Diemer even taught salespeople how to blow bubbles. They then taught potential customers.
The Story of the Comics
The first Dubble Bubble gum came with a color comic strip. It was called the Fleer Funnies. The first characters, ‘Dub and Bub’, appeared in 1930. They were replaced by the well-known Pud and his friends in 1950. Pud was much rounder at first. Later, in the 1960s, he became slimmer.
The early comics were large and colorful. They also included Fleer Fortunes and Dubble Bubble Facts. The comics were numbered in order. This made them easy to collect. But they were not dated. So, it is hard to know the exact year they came out. By the late 1950s and early 1960s, Fleer Funnies became smaller. More than 1,002 comics have been released over the years.
Dubble Bubble During Wartime and Today
During World War II, Dubble Bubble was given to the military. Sugar and latex became hard to find because of the war. So, bubble gum making stopped in 1942. In 1951, Fleer started making Dubble Bubble again. The gum's popularity grew steadily.
Over time, Fleer added new flavors. They also made new types of gum, like ball gum. They started selling their products in more countries. In 1957, Fleer introduced the first gum 6-pack with Dubble Bubble.
In 1998, Concord Confections bought Dubble Bubble. In 1999, they started selling Dubble Bubble as a gumball. In 2003, Tootsie Roll Industries bought Concord. Since then, Dubble Bubble has used a different recipe. They also stopped including the comic strips and fortunes on the wrappers. But Pud is still their mascot!
