Dubble Bubble is a famous American bubble gum. It usually tastes like fruit and is pink. An accountant named Walter Diemer invented it in 1928. He worked for the Fleer Chewing Gum Company in Philadelphia. Walter loved to create new gum recipes using Fleer's ingredients.
Before Walter, the company's founder, Frank H. Fleer, tried to make bubble gum in 1906. He called his gum "Blibber-Blubber." But it was too sticky and broke apart easily, so they stopped making it. Twenty years later, Walter Diemer used this old idea to help him invent Dubble Bubble.

The Story of Dubble Bubble
How Bubble Gum Was Invented
The Fleer Chewing Gum Company in Philadelphia wanted to make a gum that could blow bubbles without being too sticky. In 1928, Walter Diemer was trying out new gum recipes. He noticed one of his new gums was less sticky than regular chewing gum.
When he tested it, he found he could blow bubbles easily. After a year of trying, he made his first successful batch of bubble gum. But the next morning, he could not make it again.
Walter spent four months trying to copy his first success. Finally, he made a large 300-pound batch of what would become Dubble Bubble. The only food coloring available at the factory was pink. So, Walter had to use it. This is why pink became the most common color for bubble gum everywhere.
First Sales and Big Success
Walter used a machine that wrapped salt water taffy to wrap 100 pieces of his new gum. He took them to a local candy store. The gum cost one penny each and sold out in just one day!
Soon, the Fleer Chewing Gum Company started making bubble gum using Walter's recipe. They called it "Dubble Bubble" gum. Walter's bubble gum was the first bubble gum ever sold in stores. In its first year, sales were over 1.5 million dollars. To help sell the new gum, Walter himself taught salespeople how to blow bubbles. Then, they could teach customers.
Comics and Changes Over Time
The first Dubble Bubble gum came with a color comic strip called Fleer Funnies. The characters, 'Dub and Bub', appeared in 1930. Later, in 1950, they were replaced by the famous Pud and his friends. Pud was much rounder at first, but became slimmer in the 1960s.
The early comics were big and colorful. They also included Fleer Fortunes and Dubble Bubble Facts. The comics were numbered, which made collecting them fun. Over 1,002 different comics have been released.
During World War II, Dubble Bubble was given to the military. But sugar and latex became hard to find because of the war. So, bubble gum making stopped in 1942.
In 1951, Fleer started making Dubble Bubble again. Its popularity grew steadily. Over time, Fleer added new flavors and different types of gum, like ball gum. They also started selling their products in other countries. In 1957, Fleer made the first gum 6-pack with Dubble Bubble.
In 1998, Concord Confections bought Dubble Bubble. In 1999, they introduced Dubble Bubble as a gumball. In 2003, Tootsie Roll Industries bought Concord Confections. Since then, Dubble Bubble has used a different recipe. The comic strips and fortunes on the wrappers were stopped. But Pud is still the mascot!
