The Triteleia dudleyi, also known as Dudley's triteleia, is a special type of flowering plant. It is found only in California, which means it is endemic to that state. This beautiful plant grows in the high mountains, specifically in parts of the High Sierra Nevada and the Transverse Ranges.
What is Dudley's Triteleia?
Dudley's triteleia is a perennial herb. This means it's a plant that lives for more than two years and doesn't have a woody stem like a tree. It grows from a special underground storage organ called a corm. A corm is like a short, swollen underground stem that helps the plant store food.
Where Does It Grow?
This plant loves cool, mountain environments. It thrives in subalpine climates, which are found just below the treeline in mountains. Imagine forests high up in the mountains where the air is crisp and cool – that's where you'll find Dudley's triteleia!
How Does It Look?
Dudley's triteleia usually has two or three long, thin leaves at its base. These leaves can grow up to 30 centimeters (about 12 inches) long and about one centimeter wide.
The Flowers
The plant sends up a straight stem that can reach 30 to 35 centimeters (about 12 to 14 inches) tall. At the top of this stem, you'll find a cluster of many flowers. This cluster looks a bit like an umbrella and is called an umbel.
Each flower is shaped like a funnel and starts out yellow. As the flower gets older, it dries and turns a pretty purple color. Each flower has six petal-like parts, called lobes, which are about 1.2 centimeters long. Inside the flower, there are six stamens, which are the parts that produce pollen. These stamens have lavender-colored tips called anthers.
