Dudley Ryder, 2nd Earl of Harrowby (born May 19, 1798 – died November 19, 1882) was an important British politician. He was also known as Viscount Sandon before 1847. He held significant government jobs under Lord Palmerston. These roles included Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1855 and Lord Privy Seal from 1855 to 1858.

Dudley Ryder was born in London, England. His father was Dudley Ryder, 1st Earl of Harrowby. His mother was Lady Susanna Leveson-Gower. He went to Christ Church, Oxford for his education.
Early Military Service
Before becoming a full-time politician, Dudley Ryder was an officer. He joined the Staffordshire Yeomanry. This was a type of volunteer military force. He became a lieutenant in 1819. Later, he was promoted to captain in 1826. He left the military in 1831 to focus on his political career.
His Journey in Politics
Dudley Ryder began his political life in 1819. He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP). This meant he represented people in the British Parliament.
Representing the People
He first represented the area of Tiverton. He held this seat until 1831. After that, he became the MP for Liverpool. He continued to represent Liverpool until 1847.
During these years, he also held other government positions. In 1827, he was a Lord of the Admiralty. This role involved managing the Royal Navy. From 1830 to 1831, he worked as Secretary to the Board of Control. This board oversaw affairs in British India.
Joining the House of Lords
In 1847, Dudley Ryder's father passed away. This meant Dudley inherited the title of Earl of Harrowby. As an Earl, he gained a seat in the House of Lords. This is the upper house of the British Parliament.
He didn't take on a new government job right away. But in 1855, Lord Palmerston appointed him. He became the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. This was an important government role. At the same time, he joined the Privy Council. This is a group of advisors to the monarch.
A few months later, he moved to another role. He became the Lord Privy Seal. He held this position until 1858.
Beyond Government Roles
In 1859, he received a very special honor. He was made a Knight of the Garter. This is one of the highest honors in Britain.
Dudley Ryder was also very interested in statistics. He served as President of the Royal Statistical Society three times. He also chaired important government committees. He was known for strongly supporting the Church of England.
Family Life
Lord Harrowby married Lady Frances Stuart. She was the daughter of John Stuart, 1st Marquess of Bute. They got married on September 15, 1823.
They had two sons together:
- Dudley Francis Stuart Ryder, 3rd Earl of Harrowby (born 1831 – died 1900)
- Henry Dudley Ryder, 4th Earl of Harrowby (born 1836 – died 1900)
Lady Harrowby passed away in March 1859. Lord Harrowby remained a widower. He died at Sandon Hall on November 19, 1882. He was 84 years old. His elder son, Dudley, inherited his titles.
