Duffields is a small place in Jefferson County, West Virginia, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.

Discovering Duffields

Duffields is known for its interesting history, especially its connection to trains and the American Civil War. It's a quiet area today, but it played an important role in the past.

A Historic Train Station

One of the most famous spots in Duffields is the old train station, called the Duffields depot. This depot is very special because it's the second oldest surviving train station built by the B&O Railroad. It was named after Richard Duffield, who owned the land before the Civil War and helped build it.

The depot has been recognized as a historic place since 2007. It's now on the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important to American history. The old depot isn't used for trains anymore, but there are plans to turn it into a museum.

Duffields During the Civil War

During the American Civil War, Duffields was a very important location. A group of soldiers from the Confederate army, known as Company H of the 2nd Virginia Infantry, came from this area.

The Duffields train depot became a key target during the war. One famous event happened on June 29, 1864, when a Confederate captain named John S. Mosby captured the depot. Later, on October 14, 1864, Mosby's soldiers, called Rangers, raided a Union army train carrying money. This event was known as the "Greenback raid." These events show how important the train lines and depots were for moving supplies and people during the war.

Getting Around Today

Today, Duffields is still connected by train, but in a different way. The modern Duffields MARC Train station serves the community. The MARC Train is a commuter rail system that helps people travel.

You can catch a train from Duffields to Washington, D.C. or Martinsburg. These train services run on weekdays, making it easier for people to travel for work or other activities.
