Duida–Marahuaca National Park facts for kids
Duida–Marahuaca National Park is a special place in the Amazonas state of Venezuela. It's like a giant nature preserve, covering a huge area of 210,000 hectares (that's about 519,000 acres!). This park protects a unique group of mountains called the Duida–Marahuaca Massif.
The park was created in 1978 to keep its amazing nature safe. Later, in 1993, it became part of an even bigger protected area called the Alto Orinoco-Casiquiare Biosphere Reserve. This means it's recognized internationally for its important plants and animals.
Amazing Animals of the Park
This national park is home to many animals that can't be found anywhere else in the world. These are called endemic species.
Unique Frogs
The tall, flat-topped mountains in Venezuela, known as tepuys, are like islands in the sky. They are home to many frog species found nowhere else. Some of these special frogs live only on one single tepuy!
- Frogs of Cerro Duida
- The Mount Duida frog (Dischidodactylus duidensis) is one such unique frog. It lives only on Cerro Duida.
- Frogs of Cerro Marahuaca
- Several frog species are known only from the very top of Cerro Marahuaca. These include Pristimantis marahuaka, Metaphryniscus sosai, and Myersiohyla inparquesi. Scientists are still learning about these rare creatures.
Special Birds
The park is also a great place for birdwatchers! It protects several bird species, including some that are very rare.
- Duida Grass Finch
- One example is the Duida grass finch (Emberizoides duidae). This small bird is another example of the unique wildlife that calls this park home.
