Duncan, North Carolina facts for kids
Duncan is a small place in Harnett County, North Carolina, United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.
Duncan is located in a part of Harnett County called Buckhorn Township. It's also considered part of the larger Dunn area. This area is connected to the even bigger Raleigh–Durham–Cary region, which is a major economic and cultural hub in North Carolina.
History of Duncan
Duncan wasn't always called Duncan! Before the 1930s, this community was known by a different name: Casma.
The name changed because of the railroad. As more trains and railroad activities grew around the "Duncan Depot Station," people started calling the whole community "Duncan." This often happened in the past, where train stations gave their names to the places around them.
Nature and Waterways
Duncan is also home to the beginnings of two important creeks. Avents Creek and Parkers Creek both start in ponds near Duncan. These creeks then flow into the larger Cape Fear River, which is a major river in North Carolina.
