Dune 2000 is an exciting real-time strategy (RTS) game where you control armies and build bases. It was made by Westwood Studios and came out in 1998. The game is based on the famous science fiction books by Frank Herbert, which tell the story of a desert planet called Arrakis.

In Dune 2000, you get to lead one of three powerful families, known as "Houses," as they fight for control of Arrakis. This planet is super important because it's the only place where a valuable substance called "spice" can be found. Spice is needed for space travel and gives special powers, making it the most important resource in the universe!

What is a Real-Time Strategy Game?

A real-time strategy game, or RTS, is a type of video game where you make decisions and control your units as the game happens, without taking turns. Imagine playing a board game, but everyone moves at the same time!

In Dune 2000, you need to:

  • Gather resources: Collect spice to earn money.
  • Build your base: Create buildings like factories, power plants, and defense towers.
  • Train your army: Make different types of soldiers, tanks, and aircraft.
  • Fight your enemies: Use your army to attack other Houses and protect your own base.

The game uses a similar computer program to Command & Conquer: Red Alert, another popular strategy game from the same creators. This means it has a familiar look and feel if you've played those games.

The Great Houses of Dune

Just like in the older game Dune II, Dune 2000 lets you play as one of three main Houses. Each House has its own special units, buildings, and ways of playing. Choosing a House changes your strategy and how you approach the battles on Arrakis.

House Atreides

The symbol for House Atreides.

House Atreides is known for being noble and honorable. They are from a planet called Caladan, which is full of water. When they come to Arrakis, they try to be fair and work with the native people of the desert, the Fremen. Their special units often focus on strong defenses and powerful, well-trained soldiers. They are often seen as the "good guys" in the story.

House Harkonnen

The symbol for House Harkonnen.

House Harkonnen is the opposite of Atreides. They are cruel and brutal, coming from a dark, industrial planet called Giedi Prime. They love to use brute force and destructive weapons. Their special units are often very powerful in direct combat and can cause a lot of damage. They are the main enemies of House Atreides and are always looking for ways to gain more power and control.

House Ordos

The symbol for House Ordos.

House Ordos is a mysterious and secretive House. They are not from the original books but were created for the Dune video games. They are known for their clever tactics, sneaky units, and focus on trade and technology. They often use tricks and advanced gadgets to win battles instead of just raw power. They are from a cold, icy planet and are very focused on making money and gaining an advantage through any means necessary.

Gameplay and Missions

In Dune 2000, you play through a series of missions for your chosen House. Each mission has different goals, like destroying an enemy base, protecting a valuable area, or gathering a certain amount of spice. As you complete missions, the story unfolds, and you learn more about the struggle for Arrakis.

The game also has a multiplayer mode, which means you can play against your friends or other players online. This adds a lot of fun, as you can test your strategies against real people!
