In 2010, about 6,235 people lived in Dunlap. It used to be a small farming area. But by the 1980s, it grew into a suburb of bigger cities nearby, like Elkhart and Goshen, Indiana.
A very important event in Dunlap's history happened on April 11, 1965. Most of the community was destroyed by two very strong tornadoes. These tornadoes were part of a huge storm system known as the Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak.

Dunlap has a short but interesting history. A post office was first opened here in 1886. This was a place where people could send and receive mail. The post office stayed open for many years. However, it was eventually closed in 1902.
