History of Dupont
Dupont became an official borough in 1917. Before that, it was known as "Smithville." This name honored the first families who settled there.
The town was later renamed Dupont. This new name came from a company called Dupont Explosives. This company made special materials used for mining. These explosives were very important for coal mining in Northeastern Pennsylvania during the 1800s and 1900s. Over time, new technology made these explosives less needed. Because of this, the Dupont Explosives company eventually closed down.
