The Duquesne Club is a special private club located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1873. Think of it as a place where people can meet, socialize, and enjoy different activities together.

History of the Duquesne Club

DuquesneClub
Duquesne Club Building, built in 1887

The Duquesne Club first opened its doors in 1873. Its very first president was a person named John H. Ricketson.

The club's current building is quite old and beautiful. It was finished in 1890. The building has a unique style called Richardsonian Romanesque. This style uses strong, heavy stone and round arches. It was designed by a team of architects called Longfellow, Alden & Harlow.

Later, in 1931, an addition was built onto the club. This new part included a garden patio, a barbershop, and updated kitchens. This addition was designed by Janssen & Cocken.

The building is considered very important. In 1976, it was recognized as a landmark by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation. Then, in 1995, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical place in the United States.

For many years, only men could be members of the Duquesne Club. But in 1980, the club made a big change. They voted to allow women to become members for the first time.

In 1994, the club added a health and fitness center. This gave members a place to exercise and stay active. The Duquesne Club has also been recognized as a top club. It was ranked as the #1 City Club in America in 1997. It earned this honor again in 2001, 2003, and 2006.

Famous Visitors

Many well-known people have visited the Duquesne Club over the years. These include several U.S. Presidents like Ulysses S. Grant, Herbert Hoover, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and Bill Clinton.

Other famous guests include important leaders and figures. For example, Colin Powell, who was a U.S. general and Secretary of State, visited the club. Polish leader Edward Gierek also came to the club. Even King Charles III visited when he was still the Prince of Wales. Former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was another notable guest.

Who Can Join?

As of 2007, the Duquesne Club had about 2,700 members. This group included both men and women.

The club does not pick members based on their background. However, you can only become a member if an existing member invites you. This means it's a private club where new members are brought in by current members.
