Duror was a railway station located near Cuil Bay. This area is on the east shore of Loch Linnhe at Keil, just south of Duror in the Highland region of Scotland. It was part of the Ballachulish branch line. This line connected Connel Ferry to Ballachulish. Connel Ferry was on the main Callander and Oban Railway line. Duror station is no longer in use today.

History of Duror Station

Duror station first opened its doors on 24 August 1903. When it was built, the station had two platforms. These platforms were on either side of a special track called a crossing loop. A crossing loop allowed two trains to pass each other on a single-track line. There was also a siding to the north of the station. A siding is a short extra track used for parking trains or railway wagons.

On 8 April 1927, one of the platforms was taken out of use. The crossing loop was also removed at this time.

The station finally closed down in 1966. This happened when the entire Ballachulish Branch of the Callander and Oban Railway was shut.

How Trains Were Controlled

The Ballachulish Branch line used a special system to control trains. It was called the electric token system. This system made sure that only one train could be on a certain section of track at a time. This helped prevent accidents.

The Duror signal box was a small building. It had 18 levers inside. From here, a signalman could control the train signals and the tracks. The signal box was located on the platform for trains heading in one direction (the "Up platform"). This was on the east side of the railway. The signal box and the crossing loop were both taken out of use on 8 April 1927.
