Starting His Career at Sunderland
Ephraim "Dusty" Rhodes was born in South Bank, North Yorkshire. He started his football journey at his hometown club, South Bank. In 1901, he moved to Grangetown Athletic. His team finished second in the Northern League during the 1901–02 season.
His great playing skills caught the eye of Sunderland. This team was the champion of the Football League First Division at the time. Dusty joined Sunderland in May 1902. He played five games in his first season. He slowly became a regular player over the next few years.
Dusty played 28 games in the 1904–05 season. He scored his first goal for Sunderland from a penalty kick. He continued to play many games and score goals. In his final season with Sunderland (1907–08), he scored a goal from open play. Overall, he played 120 games and scored five goals for Sunderland over six seasons.
Playing for Brentford
In July 1908, Dusty Rhodes moved to London. He joined Brentford, a club in the Southern League First Division. In his first season, he helped Brentford win the Southern Professional Charity Cup. This was the first trophy of his career.
Dusty played nearly 400 games for Brentford, including matches during wartime. He signed up to play again for the first season after World War I in September 1919. However, he did not play any more games and then retired as a player.
Coaching and Managing Teams
Dusty Rhodes became the player-manager of Brentford in November 1912. This meant he was both a player and the team's manager. His time as manager started tough. The team was moved down to the Southern League Second Division at the end of the 1912–13 season.
He stopped being the manager at the end of the 1914–15 season. Dusty managed Brentford in 87 games. He won 38 of these games, drew 19, and lost 30. He later returned to Brentford as a trainer from 1922 to 1925.
His Life Off the Field
Dusty Rhodes married Daisy Caroline Shinner in 1904. They had three children together. During the First World War, he served in the Royal Army Pay Corps. His younger brother, Ernie, was also a football player. Dusty and Ernie played together at Grangetown Athletic and Sunderland. After his time playing and managing, Dusty became a big fan of Brentford.
