Dušan Makavejev (born October 13, 1932 – died January 25, 2019) was a famous film director and writer from Serbia. He was known for making unique and thought-provoking movies in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Many of his films were part of a special style called the "Black Wave" in cinema.
His most well-known film around the world was W.R.: Mysteries of the Organism from 1971. This movie was a satire, which means it used humor and exaggeration to comment on political ideas. Dušan Makavejev both directed and wrote this film.

Making Movies: Dušan Makavejev's Career
Dušan Makavejev's first three movies were very successful and earned him praise from around the world. These films were Man Is Not a Bird (1965), Love Affair, or the Case of the Missing Switchboard Operator (1967), and Innocence Unprotected (1968).
Innocence Unprotected even won a special award called the Silver Bear Extraordinary Prize at the 18th Berlin International Film Festival. This showed how talented he was. He also helped judge films at the Berlin and Moscow Film Festivals in later years.
His 1971 movie, W.R.: Mysteries of the Organism, caused a lot of discussion. It was not allowed to be shown in Yugoslavia because of its ideas about society and power. Makavejev explained that the film showed how people who try to control others often can't control themselves. Because of the issues with this film, Dušan Makavejev left Yugoslavia. He then lived and worked in other countries in Europe and North America.
After some time, Makavejev made more films. These included the comedy Montenegro (1981). He also directed The Coca-Cola Kid (1985), which was based on short stories. This film starred actors like Eric Roberts and Greta Scacchi and is considered one of his easier films to watch.
In 2007, Dušan Makavejev appeared in a documentary film called Zabranjeni bez zabrane. This film explored how movies were sometimes not allowed to be shown in Yugoslavia. It shared stories from filmmakers about how films were censored during that time.
Makavejev also wrote two books. These books were collections of his articles: Poljubac za drugaricu parolu (1960) and 24 sličice u sekundi (1965).
