The dwarf snakehead (scientific name: Channa gachua) is a type of fish. It belongs to the Channidae family. You might hear the name "dwarf snakehead" used for other small snakehead fish too.

This fish lives in fresh water across southern Asia. You can find it from Iran all the way to Indonesia. Scientists think C. gachua is actually a group of very similar fish species. They are so alike that they are often called a "species complex". This means there might be three or four different species hiding under one name! Researchers are still studying them to tell them apart. Some fish, like Channa harcourtbutleri, have already been identified as separate species. Also, the C. gachua living in eastern areas is often called C. limbata. The fish found only in Sri Lanka is sometimes known as C. kelaartii.

This fish can grow up to 28 centimeters (about 11 inches) long. However, most dwarf snakeheads are much smaller. They eat small fish, insects, and tiny crustaceans.

How Dwarf Snakeheads Reproduce

Dwarf snakeheads are special because they are mouthbrooders. This means the male fish keeps the eggs and young fish safe inside his mouth! Male dwarf snakeheads also have longer fins. Their colors are usually brighter and more intense than the females.

Where Do Dwarf Snakeheads Live?

You can find the dwarf snakehead in many countries. These include Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Viet Nam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore. It's a very common fish.

Dwarf Snakehead Habitats

This fish lives in almost any kind of wet place. You can find it in big rivers or small streams. It can live in fast-moving water or still water. It even lives in places changed by humans, like canals and rice paddies.

Different Types of Dwarf Snakeheads

Scientists have found that dwarf snakeheads from western and eastern areas are genetically different. This means their DNA is not the same. Because of this, some scientists think the western fish are C. gachua and the eastern ones are C. limbata. The fish in Sri Lanka are also very different genetically. So, some people call them C. kelaartii. Even though these groups are genetically distinct, they look very similar!

Why Are Dwarf Snakeheads Important?

People in many parts of Asia catch this fish for food. It is also a popular fish for aquariums because it is small and has pretty colors. Scientists have also studied this species for use in aquaculture. Aquaculture is like farming fish for food.
