Dwight Drummond's Journey in Journalism
Early Life and Education
Dwight Drummond moved to Canada in 1976. He grew up in a part of Toronto called Jane and Finch. For high school, he went to Runnymede Collegiate Institute. After that, he studied Radio and Television Arts at Ryerson University. This university is now known as Toronto Metropolitan University.
Starting a Career in TV
Drummond began his career at a TV station called Citytv in 1989. He started as a security guard for a show called Electric Circus. He learned a lot about how TV shows are made. He worked as a teleprompter operator, which helps anchors read the news. He was also a floor director, guiding people on set. He even worked as a studio cameraman and a videographer, filming stories. Later, he became the deputy chief of assignment, helping decide which stories to cover. He also anchored CityNews Streetbeat.
During his time at Citytv, he became known as their "crime specialist." This meant he focused on reporting news about crime. He even appeared briefly in a music video for the rapper Maestro Fresh-Wes, called "Let Your Backbone Slide." He was shown as the cameraman in the beginning of the video.
Facing Challenges and Changing Roles
In 1995, something important happened that affected Dwight Drummond's career. He was stopped by two Toronto Police officers. This incident was seen by many as an example of racial profiling. This means someone is treated unfairly by police because of their race. There was no proof that Drummond had done anything wrong.
This event was one of several that led to a wildcat strike by police officers that summer. After this, Bill Blair, who believed in police working closely with communities, was put in charge of that police division. The incident also helped Drummond decide to move from working behind the scenes to becoming an on-air journalist at Citytv.
Moving to Newscasting Roles
Dwight Drummond became an anchor for CityNews at Noon. Later, he also anchored CityNews at Five. In January 2010, there were some job cuts at Citytv, and he lost his anchoring job. However, he continued to work as the station's crime specialist. He left Citytv on September 6, 2010.
On October 12, 2010, he joined Anne-Marie Mediwake as a co-anchor for the evening news on CBC News: Toronto at CBC Toronto. Anne-Marie Mediwake later left in 2016 to join a show called Your Morning on CTV. Drummond then became the main anchor for the show, which was renamed CBC Toronto News with Dwight Drummond. He continued in this role until October 2022. After that, he moved to CBC News Network to host Canada Tonight. He filled in for the regular host, Ginella Massa, who was on leave.
