Dwight Harlan Powell (born July 20, 1991) is a Canadian professional basketball player. He plays for the Dallas Mavericks in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Dwight also plays for the Canadian national team. He played college basketball for the Stanford Cardinal before joining the NBA.

Early Life and High School Basketball
Dwight Powell was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. His father is Canadian and his mother is Jamaican. Later, he moved to the United States. He went to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
During his senior year, Dwight was a star player. He scored about 23 points per game. He also grabbed nearly 12 rebounds and made over 4 assists per game. Experts like Rivals.com thought he was a top player. They ranked him as one of the best power forwards in the country.
College Basketball Career
Dwight Powell went to Stanford University to play college basketball.
Freshman Year (2010–2011)
As a freshman, Dwight quickly showed his skills. He was named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team. He started in 26 out of 31 games. He averaged 8.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.
Sophomore Year (2011–2012)
In his second year, Dwight helped his team win the NIT championship. The NIT is a big college basketball tournament. He was also recognized for his good grades. He averaged 5.8 points and 4.6 rebounds.
Junior Year (2012–2013)
Dwight had a great junior year. He was named to the first-team All-Pac-12. This means he was one of the best players in his college league. He also won the Pac-12 Most Improved Player of the Year award. He started every game, averaging 14.9 points and 8.4 rebounds.
Senior Year (2013–2014)
In his final college year, Dwight was again named first-team All-Pac-12. He was also honored as the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. This award recognizes both athletic and academic success. He averaged 14.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.
Professional Basketball Career
Starting in the NBA (2014)
Dwight Powell was chosen in the 2014 NBA Draft. The Charlotte Hornets picked him as the 45th player overall. His rights were later traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Then, he was traded again to the Boston Celtics.
While with the Celtics, Dwight also played for their minor league team. This team was called the Maine Red Claws in the NBA Development League.
Joining the Dallas Mavericks (2014–Present)
In December 2014, Dwight was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. This is the team he still plays for today. In his first season with the Mavericks, he scored a season-high 11 points in one game. He also spent some time playing for the Texas Legends, another minor league team.
Growing as a Player
Dwight continued to improve with the Mavericks.
- In November 2015, he got his first "double-double." This means he had 10 points and 10 rebounds in one game.
- In March 2016, he made his first NBA start. He scored a career-high 16 points in that game.
- He signed a new contract with the Mavericks in July 2016.
- In 2017 and 2018, he set new career highs in scoring. He scored 21 points in several games.
- In March 2019, he scored a career-high 26 points against the Washington Wizards.
Injuries and Resilience
In December 2019, Dwight had a perfect shooting night. He made all 9 of his shots from the field. However, he got a left arm injury during the game.
On January 21, 2020, Dwight suffered a serious injury. He tore his Achilles tendon. This injury ended his season. But he worked hard to recover.
Return and Achievements
Dwight came back strong after his injury. In the 2021–22 NBA season, he played in all 82 games. This is a big achievement for an NBA player. He also set a Mavericks team record. He made 18 shots in a row over four games.
In July 2023, Dwight signed another contract with the Mavericks. In 2024, he helped the Mavericks reach the 2024 NBA Finals. They played against the Boston Celtics but lost in five games.
National Team Career
Dwight Powell also plays for the Canadian national team. In May 2022, he committed to playing for Canada for three years. He was named to Canada's team for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
